    Snow Leopard, Quark, Helvetica

I successfully updated my OS to the new Snow Leopard.

Everything looked fine until I opened a document in Quark... all the Helvetica Condensed / Helv Cond Bold was messed up. Kerning for the Helv Condensed looked like it was tracked out to 200, didn't fit text boxes, etc. The Bold was tracked IN by 200, all squished together.

All the other weights of Helvetica were fine. It was just these two.

Switching the font from Helvetica to Helvetica Neue did not help. Same result.

Eventually I switched the Helvetica Condensed to HelvCond Light, and the Bold to Light with a faux bold (it worked, oddly enough).

There has to be a better solution...

Before you updated to Snow Leopard were you using a different version of Helvetica? I.e, was a different version of Helvetica installed on the Mac (other than the one in the System folders) and was the document using that version?

I ask, because your upgrade would have installed a new version of Helvetica into your System folders. OSX installers (all versions) do that by default.

If you were using the System font then your font caches might be corrupt. Font Nuke can clear them on Tiger, but I'm not sure how to do that on Leopard, much less Snow Leopard.

Hi Erik. Having the same problem. Do you have any suggestions as to what other helvetica or helveticaneue will work with snow leopard? Or, will we be forced to buy the Adobe versions, that would be a ripoff. I tried deleting the protected fonts and the system fonts, but my mail headings displayed as all small squares. By the way it also affects futura.

Frank take a look at this thread and see if there is anything there that might help. This issue came up after my last post and since I'm not on Snow Leopard and this seems to be a big deal for those using Snow Leopard I can't really make any suggestions at this point.

Issue seems to be Postscript fonts. Use Transtype to convert your PS Helvetica to OpenType. That's how I fixed the issue.
