    Quark 7 color manager error

I've tried a couple of the fixes mentioned on this site, deleting files from library etc. but 7 won't open and I still get colour manager missing or damaged message - any suggestions?

     I'm running OSX Panther on a G4

Are you positive on this? If so, this is probably your problem. XPress 7.x requires Tiger minimum.

I am positive because I installed Panther, although I was told it would support 7.

My problem is that I produced a large catalogue in 5 running OS9.2, the printer took it into 7, where several updates where made prior to printing. To retain the job for the future I need to be able to open a 7 file from the printer (with all the updates, which were carried out on his Mac) on one of mine. I installed Panther with the hope of doing this and enabling me to continue to use all my other programmes on classic. I do have a G3 running 9.2 but it's slower and has a much smaller monitor, so I'd like to be able to use the G3.

Any solutions (which aren't going to cost me lots of money) would be welcome.

Terry, if you are truly on OSX 10.3.x then there really is not much you can do. Frankly, I'm unclear as to how version 7.x would have even been allowed to install on 10.3.x. I've tried that several times when I was on Panther and it never let me do it.

There is no way short of purchasing Markztools for your version of XPress to get this file open in XPress 5.x. I don't know if Markzware would even still have a copy for version 5.x.

The cheapest alternative is to buy Tiger. You can find several copies on Amazon.com (where I got mine). Neither XPress 7.x or 6.x for that matter will run on Classic. XPress 6.x was the first version to be OSX only.

The printer could downsave to version 6.x for you, but then you'd need someone to open it for you in v6.x and downsave to version 5.x.

Honestly though, the fact that your printer saved over your file and sent you back a version of the file you can't use is not good. They should have realized you were working in and older version and either not saved over the file or worked on a copy.

Re: Quark 7 color manager error

I've just bought an eMac G4 with a gig of memory, 40 gig HD, 1.something Ghz processor and dvd reader with Tiger preinstalled for £65, so I'll keep this for Quark7 Passport (I have 8.1 but I don't think Tiger will support that) so thanks for your help - it's saved me a lot of time.

I've a sneaking suspicion that the printer did it deliberately to freeze me out of the picture so he could get the job next time around - or am I just being cynical?

    Many thanks

    Hi, Terry,

    Terry Symonds:
(I have 8.1 but I don't think Tiger will support that)

yes, it will. Currently we support the following operating systems with QuarkXPress 8.12:

    • Mac OS X 10.4 (aka Tiger)
    • Mac OS X 10.5 (aka Leopard)
    • Mac OS X 10.6 (aka Snow Leopard)
    • Windows XP
    • Windows Vista (32 and 64 bit)
    • Windows 7 (still to come, as soon as it is officially released)
    • (and Citrix)

Have just bought an eMac with OSX 10.4.3 installed - Quark 7 installed fine, but unfortunately when trying to inatalled 8.1 it tells me that I need 10.4.6.

7 will get me out of the jam.

    Hi, Terry,

Quark always supports the last version of the operating system. Apple's updates are free of charge, so you can easily update 10.4.3 to 10.4.11. Something you should probably do anyhow, as the updates fix a lot of security and vulnerability issues.

And QuarkXPress 8 will run under 10.4.11. System requirements here: http://files.quark.com/download/documentation/QuarkXPress/8.12/QXP_8.12_ReadMe_en-us.pdf

    Thanks Matthias,

I did have a quick look for updates but was obviously being dense, as I couldn't find them on the Quark site. If you have a link, I'd be most grateful.

    Kind regards

I'm even more dense than I thought - I had actually searched on the Mac site, rather than the Quark site, as I'd previously stated.

    Hi, Terry,

do you mean QuarkXPress updates? They can be found here: http://downloads.quark.com/Default.aspx

What I meant though was Mac OS X updates, either choose "(Apple symbol) > Software Update" or look here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/index2.html

Re: Quark 7 color manager error

I found the update, but think I must be doing something wrong as I get an error message with words to the effect 'you cannot install on this volume as it doesn't meet the system requirements'

But as far as I can ascertain it does, it's certainly got enough free space and ram etc. I

I'm just copying it on to the HD, double clicking on it and it opens, double clicking on the installer icon, going through the steps until choosing the HD as destination and this is where it gives me the error message.

     All tips gratefully received.

Re: Quark 7 color manager error

Terry. If you are currently on 10.4.6, you'll need to do one of two or three things.

You can update incrementally. That is, download 10.4.7, 10.4.8, 10.4.9, 10.4.10, and then 10.4.11 and then apply each patch seperately. OR you can download the 10.4.11 COMBO updater and apply that patch.

I suspect you downloaded just the 10.4.11 updater. That updater will only update systems that are CURRENTLY running 10.4.10. So, if you want to go direct from 10.4.6 to 10.4.11 you need to use the combo updater.

Now. If this is all making your head spin, the easiest way to do all this is as Matthias suggested. Go to the Apple menu, select Software Update, let the Mac find what it wants/needs to update and then go to it. More than likely there will be a bunch of other stuff in there as well. In general all of that is usually ok to download and install. If you don't want to do any of that right then, just select the combo updater that the Mac finds and install it. You can always come back later and install anything you passed on at this point.

Not to be technical, but it's also a good idea to repair permissions after any OS update. You can do that by opening Disk Utility in the Applications/Utilitys folder, selecting your Hard Drive and clicking on repair permissions. Then you are good to go.

Installing QXP 8.x shouldn't be an issue once you update to 10.4.11.

Thanks, that's just the information I needed. I wasn't sure what combo meant and now I know, I'm actually on 10.4.3.

The Mac isn't actually connected to the internet, I have that on PC up at the house - all the Mac stuff is down in my studio.

Thanks for the help you guys, I really appreciate it.
