Corrupt activation file qx 6.5 and 7.3.1

Yesterday, my computer gave me a corrupt preference file. I removed the file, now I'm getting the "Activation file for this copy of Quark Xpress has been corrupted. You will need to reinstall this copy of Quark Xpress." This message is happening for both versions 6.5 and 7.3.1. Do I really need to reinstall or is there a work around that I can just dump and replace the activation codes? I am working on a mac G5 with 10.4.11. Thanks

Yes, there is a workaround. You'll need to reactivate, but that's much better than reinstalling. Doing this will delete the activation files for both copies of XPress.

Quit your running versions of XPress.

Go here: Macintosh HD>Library>Preferences. Find the "Quark" folder. It is an "empty" folder meaning you can't see what's inside, but this is where the activation files are stored. Delete the Quark folder.

Restart your versions of XPress and reactivate.

    Hope that helps.

No you won't. Your own knowledgebase says deleting the Quark folder in Macintosh HD>Library>Preferences will take care of this. I've done it 3 or 4 times because of this problem. No reinstall necessary. Do you guys read your own knowledge base?

    Solution number 1 Gaurav.

    Come on! Reinstall?! Please...!

The preference folder for quark has three folders inside. 1) jaws; 2) QuarkXPress 6.0, (this folder has lots of things inside, layers.prf, index.prf, also three folders, Install, MRu and PPD. Will these all regenerate or should I at least copy the PPD folder? Thanks!

That's the folder in Users>~username>Library>Preferences. Leave that one alone. The folder you want is in the Libary>Preferences>Quark at the ROOT of your Hard Drive.

The name of your hard drive>Library>Preferences>Quark

So, double-click on the icon for your hard drive on your desktop. Find the Library folder. Find the Preferences folder. Find the Quark folder.

OK, sorry for the delay. Hard drive>Library>Preferences>Quark The Quark folder is not on my hard drive. Any other place it could be? If not, how should I proceed? Thanks

Re: Corrupt activation file qx 6.5 and 7.3.1

I have no idea, other than a reinstall if that folder is not present. I've not seen that issue. There is supposed to be a Quark folder in the location specified. Since it's not there I don't know what's going on then.

Thanks, I do have that folder on two other machines, but not the one with the problem. Do you think I should reload just one version and that will take care of both or should I reload both. Both are needed. thanks again.

Re: Corrupt activation file qx 6.5 and 7.3.1

I would reinstall and update both. Activation of 6.x won't give you activation of 7.x and vice-versa. Both app activations are exclusive to their own versions.

As a hail mary you might try running the System Components installer. That's inside the app folders inside a folder called For System. It might work. If it doesn't, reinstall.

Erik, Thanks for all your help and for your info, your hail mary worked. I ran the System Components installer for both 6.x and 7.x and it put the Quark folder into the Library>Preferences folder and both went out to the internet and reactivated. Thank you so much. Much easier than reload both programs. Have a great evening.

For Mac: If you have Time Machine up and running replace BOTH Quark preferences folders from a previous day Quark was working: HD/library/preferences and HD/users/library/preferences... Restart. Thats it.

catwink. I don't think Tiger is capable of using Time Machine. That's a Leopard feature right?
