Clipping path images obscured in pdf output

Using Quark 6.5, have imported photos from photoshop TIFFs with clipping paths. In the quark window in which I'm doing the layout, they appear just fine, but when I export to pdf, some, but not all of the clipped images show what looks like a dark mask over them. I've compared the ones that are working okay with the ones that are not and have not yet found any difference. I tried saving a page as an EPS file--the images in question show up okay on screen in that--but when I distilled with Adobe Acrobat distiller, I got the same weirdness. Tried pulling the eps into a new quark document and exporting as pdf from that and still had same result. Anyone have suggestions as to what the source of the problem and possible resolution might be? Thanks.

What happens if you use an alpha channel in the TIFs instead of a clipping path?

With one image I got exactly the same result. With the other, a person appears as though a green overlay is masking him. I looked at 9 other images that have clipping paths in this brochure and the two errant ones have the very same settings.

Blessedly a good friend was over for dinner and I mentioned my dilemma to him. He recalled having had problems with images that had transparency in them, and sure enough, when I went back to the Photoshop images, the two that were causing problems both had transparent backgrounds. When I flattened the images and then reimported them into Quark, they worked as desired. Hope this helps someone else at some point.
