Patrick. Try having them copy the file to the hard drive first (if still on the zip disk). Then have them add the following three letter extension: .qxd (for QuarkXPress Document)
Then have them try to open the file. If it still won't open, then have the client go in to XPress and open the file by going to File>Open, navigating to the file and then clicking on it.
This applies both to PC and Mac. If your client is Mac and they put this file on a PC formatted Zip disk at some point it would have stripped out the file association (because Macs store files differently). Adding the extension will restore the file assocation.
