Quark (8) documents have no icons

on the Mac desktop, they're just blank pages (the thumbnails), shouldn't there be something to indicate that they are Quark docs just as there were with Quark 4 or 6x??? What am I missing? TIA, Geoff

Hi Geoff. Have you associated the documents with XPress? Get Info and select Open With and then select XPress 8.x. Are the files already associated with XPress 8? What happens if you double-click on the documents to open them?

If you can open the documents by double-clicking on them and they are associated with XPress 8.x and you still have blank icons, you most probably need to rebuild your LaunchServices database. When you select a file in Finder and go to OpenWith do you get a list of apps with some that appear more than once? That would be a good indicator of needing to rebuild Launch Services.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you need instructions on rebuilding the database.

Re: Quark (8) documents have no icons

This subject has always stumped me because I sometimes get a Quark doc with no icon, but only in certain locations at certain times.

For instance, if I drag a Q8 doc to a folder which is on our server, the Quark might end up with no icon. If it has no icon, I drag it back to the desktop and then back to the folder and it now has an icon. Quark docs on my desktop always have an icon, but sometimes (but not always!) if it's in a folder on the server there is no icon.

    What's the explanation?

Thanks Eric, I ran Cocktail then ran the "Rebuild launch services database" (from Cocktail as well) with no joy. Is there another/better method? Thanks again, Geoff

Sorry if this is a bit obvious, but you could just try adding a suffix '.qxd' or '.qxp' to the name of the icon. That works for me.

Exactly what I was going to suggest. Geoff you said that when you have these files on your desktop you have an icon and when you have them on the server it sometimes dissapears. I'm guessing you probably have a Windows or Unix/Linux server. Neither of those types of servers store files in the same way that Macs do. You need to add the three letter extension as dragdes mentioned to keep the icon.
