 I have having terrible trouble printing out documents directly from quark 7.3 and 6to this Epson 1400 printer as i just keep getting blank pages comming out, the only way i can get it to work is if i make a pdf of the page or save the page as eps then that works. could anybody help has i would be gratefully appreciated as i am fed up of making PDFs and Eps 

My bet is your printer is not a Post Script printer so to what I know you have no other way than generating a PDF and print it.

Because your printer device does not "understand" PostScript language. It's that simple. A PDF somehow has interpreted it. Thus generating a PDF is the only workaround to print a QuarkXPress document on a non-PostScript printer.

 That is fine but how come the same job prints out in Adobe indesign and not quark which is not good

Just for your information, QuarkXPress 7 and 8 CAN print to non-postscript devices, however it is handled differently than printing to PostScript devices. Also some features are not available for non-PS printers.

I'm sorry about my outdated information. It's true that I myself encountered that issue back in v6 when I had a non-PS printer. I was just thinking it was sth "unfixable". Fortunately you're reading us…

FYI, I have a non-PostScript HP P1006 that won't accept native IDCS3. I make PDFs when I want to print.

 Thank you for all your help and yes it is working now perfectly. just one more question because you have to click scale to fit paper it the document still the original size not reduced or enlarged

no problem, and in the past QuarkXPress was incapable to print to non-PostScript devices.

And though in QuarkXPress 7 and 8 it works as described, our recommendation is still to use an output device capable of understanding PostScript (or PDF).
