    Quark 6.1 and Snow Leopard

Sorry, I know I'm using an old version of Quark, but I have an urgent job to do. I'm on OSX 10.6.1 (no choice - new machine). It opens Quark 6.1 just fine and most functions seem to work, but I'm getting odd/serious anomalies on the display of text. Please can anyone tell me what Version of Quark would work correctly?

QuarkXPress 7.31 was the first version of XPress certified to run on Leopard. XPress 8.x will run on Snow Leopard, but I'm not sure which current version (probably 8.1) is certified to run on Snow Leopard.

QXP 6.x had issues on Leopard. I'm not surprised to find more issues on Snow Leopard as QXP 6.x was originally designed for Jaguar.

Run the 10.6.2 update that just came out, it fixed some serious font issues. These are known to cause font movement in XPress 7 and 8 on 10.6, so despite 6.x not being supported it seems fairly likely it is the same issue in this instance. What other issues there may be are another story...

I can't even get the 6.1 installer to work on Leopard.

When you originally installed Snow Leopard did you make sure to include Rosetta? It has to be manually included as part of the install. Apple no longer has it installing as a default because they are trying to move away from the Motorola Power PC chip.

The reason I ask that is that because the 6.1 installer would be PPC code based. Therefore to run it to install, you'd need to be running it under Rosetta. If Rosetta is not installed, the installer won't run.

Unfortunately I didn't do the original installation. Would I have to re-install? Can't I just download rosetta and install it separately?

Oh, and thanks for getting back to me!

Hmm. Apparently the OS is supposed to as you if you want to install Rosetta whenever it encounters an app requiring Rosetta. It then does install Rosetta if you tell it to. Since you did not mention any warnings then I assume it must be installed and that the 6.1 installer is thus failing.

Are you installing from a CD or a disk image?

Re: Quark 6.1 and Snow Leopard

I've just been told by Quark that they can't make 6.1 or 6.5 compatable with OSX anymore. So I'll probably leave it there for now. Thanks for trying to help though.

That is because they don't support version 6.x anymore, so they won't help you. I was just going to say that you could make a folder on your desktop and copy over all the files from the CD and then try running the installer from the desktop folder. Worth a shot.

Quark will tell you it's not supported on Leopard and Snow Leopard (version 6.x). They never mention that it will run (not well, but it does run). They just say you have to upgrade XPress because they want to sell you a copy of the program and they don't want to deal with supporting the older versions.

Re: Quark 6.1 and Snow Leopard

Unfortunately the disk won't copy across because "some data in "Setup QuarkXpress 6.1" can't be read or written (error code -36)"

Thank you for your help, really. I was hoping to install version 6 on this imac in order to open older files. I guess it's probably worth investing in QXP to ID software for the times I might need to access the quark files. I have version 8 on my work laptop so I will use that for the times I need to open anything quark.

To my mind quark hasn't run well since OS9. I particularly regret upgrading my work version from 6 to 8. But, from what you're saying, the version 6 wouldn't run very well on Leopard anyway. I wish my G4 was working... that's still got OS9 on it. I think that will be my new year's resolution: Get my G4 fixed.

    Thank you Erik.

Re: Quark 6.1 and Snow Leopard

You're welcome. Sorry we couldn't get it working. On the other hand, QXP 6.x was originally created when OSX 10.2 was new. Apple has made quite a few changes since then. Most of the issues I see regarding this are from people who have upgraded the OS, but already have QXP 6.x installed/upgraded. So, this was a new one for me.

Incidentally, just to be clear. QXP 6.x won't run on OS9. It was the first version of QXP to be OSX native. So, if you do get your G4 fixed, you are going to have to install OSX on it to get QXP 6.x to run.

Re: Quark 6.1 and Snow Leopard

That's okay, I already have QXP 4 on my G4. (or it could be version 5) I've also got OSX installed alongside OS9.

    Cheers,
    Jean
