Have you tried cleanigf font caches. Sometimes XPress will get confused, particularly if you are using different types of the same font. Note too that QXP 6.x does not handle extended attributes of OpenType fonts.
FontNuke is a good cleaner, but any of your standard OSX maintenance tools will have this option (Coctail, Onyx, Main Menu, etc).
You can also try deleting the jaws folder (which is inside the QuarkXPress 6.0 application folder). It will recreate itself when you restart XPress.
Lastly, I might suggest an update to 6.52. 6.0 is pretty old, updates are free and there has been quite a few bug fixes since 6.0.
