    Trouble with Quark and Excel

We use Windows-based Quark and recently upgraded from Quark 6.1 to Quark 8.02. We publish a LOT of Excel graphs, using the Edit>Import object>Create from file function. In the past we were able to use this to link to the Excel spreadsheet and print high-quality charts. Now the charts are all bitmap images in this new version, and unprintable! Anyone have a workaround for this? Help is greatly appreciated!

Re: Trouble with Quark and Excel

We have a similar problem. We use Mac-based Quark 8.12 and we import a lot of excel spreadsheets into our Quark projects. We also have problems with the tables coming across unprintable. We don't use Quark to produce these tables as they are extensive and are created from a database. When we used Quark 6, we would just copy the data and paste into a picture box. When we do this now, the text is unreadable. My question is, is the font the problem or is there a problem with Quark working with Excel[quote user="mphillips76

QuarkXPress 8.12 provides better ways of importing Charts to be able to print them at High Resolution. Please follow these steps:

    1. Draw a picture box.

    2.Open the import dialog (Ctrl+E).

    3. Select the MS Excel file that contains the chart you want to import.

    4. There will be dropdown at the end of the dialog box that shows all the charts present in the Excel File. Select the chart you need and press OK.

Now you should have a Chart that can be printed at High Resolution.

This chart is also linked to the original excel file and the modifications can be updated from Utilities -> Usage -> Picture (Just like any other picture file).

Please post if you still face issues with this.

Re: Trouble with Quark and Excel

I've just tried that as an experiment and I get this Quark error message:

Unable to open the chart for possibly one or more of the following reasons.

    Chart has been renamed

Sheet which contains the chart has been renamed

File does not contain any charts

    Sheet/chart is protected

Please make sure that you select an excel file that contains a chart and that the chart is available in the dropdown of the import dialog.

Do you see a preview of the chart while importing?

Your version of MS Office sound also be an issue. MS Office 2007 is not supported as yet, please save as Excel 2003 format if that is the case.

    I hope this will help.

Re: Trouble with Quark and Excel

My issue is not about importing charts (excel picture files) but excel worksheets. We used to be able to copy from Excel and paste into Quark. All formatting, including fonts, borders etc would copy exactly. We have recently figured out that if we create a table box and then "link to external data", then choose the workbook, then the sheet and then the cell range it will bring the workbook into Quark. Once imported, the font formatting is ok but the borders are not. In Quark 6, it was simply a matter of copy and paste. We use excel extensively with Quark and to redo all line (border) formatting would be a huge task. Your help to resolve this would be most appreciated.

    Hello Sinead,

This is a known limitation of QuarkXPress 8, we are looking into that.

The only known workaround, to get high-res prints of excel data, is to export the data ads PDF from Excel. You may then import the PDF while in XPress. I know that is an extra step, however it works perfectly and takes much less time than manual editing of pasted data.
