Re: QuarkXpress 8.1 crashes at launch on new MBP Snow Leopard

Hi Matthias I received an email with the link to the updater this morning, have installed and successfully activated Quark 8! Thanks! I only have one question, as I'm sure many will also have -- what about people running version 7 on a new intel Mac with Leopard 10.5.x? I use version 7 and actually prefer it over version 8 and would like to continue to use it. Will a patch be issued for version 7 as well, for anyone running it on a supported OS like 10.4 or 10.5? I myself have a new MacBook pro 15 inch, however I have downgraded to Leopard, running 10.5.8 -- Snow Leopard has too many issues at this time. Cheers.

Re: QuarkXpress 8.1 crashes at launch on new MBP Snow Leopard

I have installed my copy of QuarkXpress 8.1 on my Mac Mini, running Mac OS 10.6.2.
The Mac is a 2.53 GHz, Intel Core Duo 2 Processor with 4 GB RAM.

When QuarkXpress is opened, the splash screen pops up and then I get an error box saying QuarkXpress quit unexpectedly.

If I select "REOPEN" then the same thing happens.  If I select "OK" the application terminates.

Found a tech note saying to reinstall.  I did so with the same problem.

Then I found this forum and found version 8.15.  Installed.  Rebooted.  No joy.  Same problem.

Any more ideas? Seems I have a very expensive piece of software that I cannot return since the package is open.  Not a hapy camper just now either.

Is there a way to delete what is on the Mac now and do a complete clean install?  Would that use my second license?

You don't mention that you did not activate your copy of XPress, but based on your issues I'm reasonably sure that you did at some point, so...

    Delete this folder. Macintosh HD>Libary>Preferences>Quark

    Restart QuarkXPress and reactivate.

    Hope that helps.

Re: QuarkXpress 8.1 crashes at launch on new MBP Snow Leopard

I had entered the Validation Code on the original instal.  Then got a mesage to reinstall (confirmed by reading one of the threads in the FAQ.  Same problem.

Found the thread on ver 8.15 for the Mac.  Downloaded and installed.  Same problem.

Kept playing with it and then found this thread.

Deleted all the Quark Libray folders I could find Library>Preferences> Quark and Users>MyUserName>Quark.  Started Quark and it appears to be working. Did not see the screen to enter the Validation Code or to reactivate however.

I plan to install on my laptop later today.  I guess if I used both activations that will show up there.  Is there a way to get another activation code just in case?

    Thanks.

There is a way to get a new validation code. Call Quark, tell them it doesn't work and they will email you a new one. If you are activating over the internet then there is no need for a new activation code. It takes care of that itself, you never see it. Only if you are activating over the phone would you need an actual activation code. And if you have 8.15 installed any activation code you get now should work.

If you did not have any problems installing then your validation code is good. The issue that this thread is covering is activation of the program.

Re: QuarkXpress 8.1 crashes at launch on new MBP Snow Leopard

Well that's nice to know Matthias, but Q8.15 still quits on startup. So what do I do now? It was a fresh install, as I had deleted Q8.12 because that didn't work either.

Running OSX 10.6.2 on a MacPro Nehalem. I'm fed up with this. I pay over the odds because I'm in the UK and Q8 still doesn't work for me. Serious enquiry - can I have my money back please? I'll stick with 7.5 which although crashes from time to time, at least it works.

yes, of course we will support all customers running QuarkXPress 7 on Leopard. As I said before:

    Matthias Guenther (Quark):
So here's how we will help you:
    - You run QuarkXPress 7 under Tiger or Leopard on any (also brand-new) hardware.
    - You run QuarkXPress 8 under Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.

    Thanks

    Hi, Kryten,

    Kryten:

Does it quit on startup or on activation? 8.15 fixes the activation issue, we are not aware of a general startup issue. I'll get techsupport to contact you to find out the culprit.

    Thanks

    Matthias and Sarbjit

An update to say I received a very helpful email, followed by a telephone call from Vikas Chopra. After a complete uninstall and reinstall Q8.15 does startup now. I had tried this before but may have left some errant files on my system which may have caused the persistent startup problem.

    Thanks for the fast support.

Hello Sarbjit, I was wondering and hoping you could email me the same steps ... I have downloaded the 815 update, tried using it, all seems fine until I try to launch Quark and once again, it crashes. I am using a new 27" iMac i7, and I did search for that sequence of numbers that were supposed to begin with a "0", but mine, like many others, began with "d". I'm hoping I am just not aware of how to be sure the previous Quark is totally uninstalled. I've gotten rid of preferences. For what it's worth, I also get a descending horizontal curtain of transparent red that comes down and freezes my computer some of the times I try to launch Quark. If you can help, I would appreciate it. Thank you. Linda Coe lindacoe@mac.com

     Everything seems to be working.

Had a call this morning from Customer Service to check on it.  What great Customer Service.

    Thanks Quark for your help

For all those who are still facing issues like crashes, please try the steps mentioned below. These couldbe a result ofmigrating old system data to the new Macs. I hope this will help.

    Complete re-install for QuarkXPress:

    1. Delete the QuarkXPress application folder located on Mac HD > Applications > QuarkXPress.

    2. Delete the 'Quark' folder located on Mac HD > Users > [User that is logged in] > Library > Preferences > Quark.

    3. Reinstall QuarkXPress.

    4. Launch QuarkXPress, choose Over the Internet, and then click Activate QuarkXPress.

Re: QuarkXpress 8.1 crashes at launch on new MBP Snow Leopard

Thank you, but it didn't work. When I install Quark it tells me I have a version running already. I do not. I have deleted files above as requested. It also does not give me a chance to tell it how I want to activate Quark. I apparently validated it either when I migrated or first time I tried to use it. I spent a lot of time today on the Quark chat help line -- basically was told everything I've already tried. The only useful thing they did was lead me to the user/library/application support/ quark folder. Deleting that let me install quark without it thinking I already had Quark on the machine. But, on launch, Quark icon bounces up and down and a transparent red curtain falls across my monitor and freezes the computer. I really really need to get back to work, and would appreciate it if you can help me. Thank you.
