Is there a diffrence between Gills Sans and Gill Sans MT

we have a  user who works off a quark template, and she reports that when creating PDFs from the quark document, or when she importing into a quark Template, she gets errors. she reckons its down to the diffrent fonts.

the fonts we have by default on all the pc's are Gill Sans MT, But the template contains GIll Sans

can you tell if there is a diffrence between the Gills Sans MT and Gill Sans font?

and if so, where can i obtain the Gill Sans font?

    Thanks

    Damien

We are using quark express 8.02, all the users are using Windows XP SP3, and office 2003 -2007.

It's not a free font few good fonts are free. It may come with a system install or you can buy it here http://www.microsoft.com/typography/Fonts/family.aspx?FID=155

Re: Is there a diffrence between Gills Sans and Gill Sans MT

    Hi

we do have the Gill Sans MT installed (all the users are using the Windows version of quark, and i think this font comes with windows)

we run into errors, when companies set up our templates with the "Gill sans" font.

here are the errors we get when trying to open the documents.

    1st error

"document1.qxp" uses fonts not installed in your system.

When i list the fonts i get

    "missing  fonts" "Replacement Fonts"

under the missing fonts  i have Gill sans bold, Gill Sans light, Gill sans, Gill sans italic

under the Replacement fonts i have  "Gill Sans MT" times 5

once you replace the gill sans with the gill sans MT, the document formatting etc is all out.

so it looks like we need to get the gill sans font on its own, but i have no idea where or how we would get it.

    any help appreciated.

    Thanks

You buy it. My guess is the template is made with a postscript version of Gill Sans. Check the box on the bottom in font usage that says more info and see what type of font it is. Then do a Google search for where to buy it.

You can buy fonts at My Fonts - for Gill

    http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/adobe/gill-sans/

    PowerMac G5, 2.7DP, 8Gb RAM; OSX 10.4.11 and 10.5.8 (on separate drives). (Also a PowerMac 7300 that's still running Quark 4.1 on OS 8.6 ...)

Re: Is there a difference between Gills Sans and Gill Sans MT

Lots of fonts (in particular, popular ones like Gill Sans) are supplied by different typographic companies or font foundries, and even though the font has the same name, it can differ (often quite radically) from supplier to supplier, which can cause problems when a customer uses the same font from a different supplier, with kerning (ie letter spacing), line endings, text overflowing etc - as you've discovered.

The Monotype version of Gill Sans is the original, 'genuine' typeface, eg

    http://www.fonts.com/findfonts/detail.htm?pid=427675

Adobe also provide a version of Gill Sans.

Other recommended font retailers to purchase Gill Sans for PC are

    hi almaink

heres what i get under font usage...

QuarkXPress cannot find this font on your computer.
    PostScript Name:  GillSans-BoldItalic

QuarkXPress cannot find this font on your computer.
    PostScript Name:  GillSans-BoldCondensed

QuarkXPress cannot find this font on your computer.
    PostScript Name:  GillSans-Bold

QuarkXPress cannot find this font on your computer.
    PostScript Name:  GillSans-Light

QuarkXPress cannot find this font on your computer.
    PostScript Name:  GillSans

QuarkXPress cannot find this font on your computer.
    PostScript Name:  GillSans-Italic

So i would need to get a postscript version of the gill sans font?

    thanks.

"So i would need to get a postscript version of the gill sans font?"

The Postscript version would normally be the recommended choice.

Note, however, that there is also a Truetype version for PC and an OpenType version. In Quark 8 under Utilities>Usage>Fonts, selecting the font and then clicking on 'More Information' at the bottom will tell you, under 'Type', what kind of font your user is using - if you can ask her to do this.

If the font is missing as it is in your Quark file, the error message will always say 'Postscript Name:' even if it is not a Postscript file (I have just tested this with a Truetype font).

     Hope this helps.

Re: Is there a diffrence between Gills Sans and Gill Sans MT

Funny thing I just got my first native Quark 8 file to output! And it uses Both Gill Sans MT (Windows TT) for the bold and bold italic and it uses plain Gill Sans also TT for the regular text. The problem is Quark will not recognize both of those fonts even tho both are active and InDesign CS3 and CS4 and every other application that can use fonts can see them both. I cleaned out both Quarks and the systems font caches to no avail. What did work was deactivating the Windows TT version of plain Gill Sans and activating my Mac dFont version of Gill sans. I'll tell ya this is one reason I stopped excepting Quark files to begin with! I also have issues with the way transparency was used in the file. If You put a background color of white on a process picture, ad a drop shadow, It leaves a white line on two edges between the picture and the shadow. If I remove the white background the white line is also gone but the shadow becomes part of the picture in an exported PDF. I also found if I KO the shadow and the picture is over another color the color bleeds through the picture like it's transparent! Funny thing is it does it on one page but not another both with the same settings. I can fix all of this but WTF should I? And WTF does it even happen? I use transparency all the time in both Illustrator and InDesign and never have any of these issues. Another problem is the way my RAMpage system sees objects in these PDF's. I'm getting strange traps all over that I have to go in and manually correct. All I can say is if this is what Quark 8 has to offer no thanks! Get it right or get the hell out of the business as this type crap cost money and the way things are going there is very little of that to waste. I really hate to bash any application but when one is made that lets people do things that don't work it pisses me off... even tho it can be corrected.

That's right. Same typeface. Different font data. More background here: http://www.fonts.com/font/monotype-imaging/gill-sans
