    Safe a custom PDF size . . .

How can I keep a PDF permanently in 150% size? When I scale a PDF to A-4 and attach it to an email it appears much smaller after opening by the addressee. Thanks.

You can set the initial opening size of a PDF. That's a feature you can set using Acrobat Pro (or possibly Distiller if you Distill your PDFs). It's not something I believe you can do with XPress's Export to PDF.

Beyond this though if the person viewing the PDF chooses to change the view size, there is nothing you can do. If the person viewing the PDF has a monitor that is either larger or smaller than yours then their perception of 150% view will be either larger or smaller than your perception of it.

    Hi Jasseltoff,

Erik's remark about not knowing about the screen resolution of the reader is a very valid remark, that's why I prefer to set PDFs to "Fit Width".

You can either do that with Acrobat - as Erik described - or directly in QuarkXPress' PDF Export options. It is under "Hyperlinks" at the very bottom, "Display". Set to "Fit Width" or "Fit Window" and you are done.

Note: You need to enable "Hyperlinks" but can disable all hyperlink creation if you prefer not to have any in your document.

Sort of related to the subject:

Is there a way to have QXP PDFs be created on a certain "paper" size?

I need to have a document with a small page (5.25" x 8.5") exported "fit to page", ie enlarged, to a PDF whose page size is 8.5 x 11"

    Hope I explained that.

Right now I have to do this via Printing to AdobePDF, but I'd like to do it with Quark's Export as PDF tool.

    Hi Witcher,

wouldn't that defeat the purpose of a "Portable" Document Format?

There's no output paper size for PDF, just the paper as you layed it out (so the layout size) plus the cropped size etc. (aka Media Boxes).

When you want to print (or view) enlarged or shrunk, just use the scaling or fitting functions of the PDF viewing app. Will that work?

    Hi Witcher,

and why is this not possible out of QuarkXPress using PDF Export? You'll export the page, get what you currently have as a screenshot in actual size of your layout. When displaying you either fit to window and when printing (to larger sheet than PDF page) you use "Fit into Printable Area" (e.g. out of Acrobat).

    Thanks

I guess if I can somehow make sure the client prints at fit to page, I'd be OK. When I create the PDF via print, I don't have to worry about how the client prints the PDF out. That's the dilemma. The client can just say, "why can't you keep making it the way you used to?"

    Hi Witcher,

    I get your point.

So explaining once what "Fit to Imageable Area" is would then be the best solution as otherwise if they ever change printer you need to do explaining again, don't you agree? And good news are, as PDF is not unique to QuarkXPress, it will work like a charm regardless from where the PDF comes from.

If you still want to create a PDF that is exactly as large as their printer margins, then maybe try "Window > Scale" to size your layout to that size (you can scale the complete layout, see palette menu for options).

    Thanks

Everything discussed so far is good I think. But you can never compensate for the uninformed or the do-it-my-way customer. You can tell them everything they need to know in exact terms that they understand and then they will go and print it in exactly the opposite manner of what you just told them and them blame you for it.

I feel for you if you are constantly having to explain a simple brain-dead concept such as shrink to fit on print all the time.
