Quark 9 Printing Spot + CMYK During Separation

Hi everyone, I just upgraded to Quark 9 from 6.5.  Everything seems to work ok until I print.  In the Color Options, I select separation and under setup only "In-Rip Separation" appears.  It shows the colors I am using, all spot colors by the way.

When I print, it not only prints out the spot colors but a CMYK plate for each color containg only the marks.  I tried turning marks off but it still prints CMYK in addition to each spot color.  I tried using the generic ppds that came with quark and its the same.  I looked at my colors and they are spot colors, pantone solid uncoated.

So for each spot color I send to the printer it generates 4 additional colors.  This becomes annoying when you have about 4 spot colors.

I tested InDesign CS5 and the color separation came out without any issues.

Its there a setting I am missing somewhere?  Please help.  Thanks.

Do you have the CMYK plates unchecked when you print?

Re: Quark 9 Printing Spot + CMYK During Separation

When I hit print, the print dialogue box comes up.  Under color I selected separation mode.

Setup is restricted to "In-RIP Separation"

For the plates, it only shows spot colors.  No CMYK at all.

When I choose Composite mode it shows CMYK and Spot colors but I can't uncheck any of them.

    Any ideas?

Thanks for replying so fast eyoungren : )

Hmm. And it doesn't matter what printer you select? You still only get InRIP separations?

Haven't really used 9.x yet, so I'm, having to guess at what's going on.

     Hi,

willng is right, I've checked this right now, I made a proof file and tried both with printing to a ps file and exporting directly to a pdf file.

You can't print or export only one color anymore, even if you choose separation > InRip Separation.

And yes, if you have only spot colors, CMYK plates are added to a pdf file.

Right now I don't have acces to a RIP for further checkings.

Every day is a good day to learn something new.

    Hi Willng,

please contact our Technical Support about this please, they will be able to offer you a solution. Or write me an email about this please (using the Contact button above this post).

And just FYI, we will be deprecating host-based separations in QuarkXPress and most likely we won't offer it at all in the next major version of QuarkXPress anymore. Of course In-RIP separations will still be possible as well as Composite.

Re: Quark 9 Printing Spot + CMYK During Separation

Well if anyone else is having this problem they will be happy to know it can be fixed, somewhat.  Quark sent me a ".xml" file to put in my Quark preference folder.  It seems to have solved the issue but not 100%.  Some eps logos that come out right on my Quark 6.5 can't be separated properly.  But it works for most of my old files.  I say 98% of them.  If anyone needs this ".xml" file, Quark Tech can provide it.  Or I can email mines over.

It's a pity :-(, I think that Quark users need any tool to check colors outside document (quantity, names) and how document will be look in separations. Without other external tools.

I know that most of users does composite file now, but its a pity.

    Hi Will,

as we prefer to keep track of everybody receiving the cookie (xml file), please do not send it to anyone else, it is suppose to be only for you. If some files have issues, did you tell tech support about it, so that we can investigate this please?

Anybody in need of host-based solution, please either contact TechSupport or myself.

    Thanks

    Hi lewaw,

    lewaw:

My crystal ball is broken today, so I can't tell you when the next major version of QuarkXPress (v10 or whatever we call it) will ship. Still, if you look at the past we have shipped a major version only every two to three years, so that does give you some time.

And personally I doubt that in three years many workflows will still rely on host-based separations.

    Thanks

Matthais, I take it that its the third use of "deprecating" below, although I suspect the original usage of praying that it would go away is more aptSmile

    dep·re·cate  (dpr-kt)

    1. To express disapproval of; deplore.

    2. To belittle; depreciate.

    3. Computer Science To mark (a component of a software standard) as obsolete to warn against its use in the future so that it may be phased out.

Usage Note: Deprecate originally meant "to pray in order to ward off something, ward off by prayer." Perhaps because the occasion of such prayers was invariably one of dread, the word developed the more general meaning of disapproval,

Re: Quark 9 Printing Spot + CMYK During Separation

    Hi Glenn,

it simply means that in the past the feature was in the software, today it isn't enabled by default though it is still in the software and in future it might be gone. I think it is typical in the IT industry to either stop supporting technology that either isn't needed anymore or to slowly phase it out over time. I just tried to mount an old floppy disk, couldn't get the driver to load. I doubt OS X still has support for it out of the box. Or think of PowerPC-based applications (with Lion that's over). Or SCSI scanners. Etc etc etc.

And I wouldn't want to go anywhere without my wonderful towel.

    Have a nice weekend!

Matthias, I work with in-RIP separation since 1998. Plus, trapping is automaticaly applied.

Do you see a day when trapping will be obsolete in XPress, in one little fragment of your broken crystal ball?

Re: Quark 9 Printing Spot + CMYK During Separation

I am in R&D and have no idea if trapping or (for instance) support for OPI will eventually disappear from XPress. That really depends on the needs of you, the customer. If it turns out that the vast majority of XPress customers consciously or otherwise use in-RIP trapping, overprint, etc, then R&D's energies are probably much better spent implementing the stuff on the top of the feature list. XPress 9 is trying to move away from host-based separations: I can assure you, that from a technical point of view, the RIP is *always* going to know better. However, there have been postings on the Quark forums since XPress 9 about this feature disappearing from the UI, so it is always hard to be sure that there is not someone out there relying upon a feature to get their work done. In XPress 7 we moved away from using QuickDraw PICT handles in picture boxes, because Apple wants to retire Quickdraw. This came at the cost of being able to paste in vector PICT illustrations. Some people were very upset about that. We are trying to move the marker on. Sometimes that doesn't suit absolutely everyone. The graphics engine in XPress 9 is vastly different, and is getting more and more capable every day. I don't have a crystal ball either but we are working very hard and I am pretty sure the outcome will be very pleasant for all concerned.
