The instructions contained in A Guide to App Studio 9.1 for installing Studio Issue Previewer on Mac 10.7 are insufficient and incomprehensible. How, for instance, does one accomplish the first item (Verify that Xcode 4.0 or later is installed)? The folders and files reference in steps 4 (Copy the decompressed folder to [Hard Disk]/Users/[User Name]/Library/Application Support/iPhone Simulator/[iOS version]/Applications) and 5 (Navigate to [Hard Disk]/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/Applications and double-click the file "iOS Simulator." The iOS Simulator launches) do not exist--is the user to create them, or is there a pre-instruction set that creates them. Why are none of these elements handled by the Quark 9 installer? In the absence of an installer to handle the addition of capabilties for App Studio functionality, a simple diagram of the cluster of various applications, plugins, and resources required to use App Studio to create and test apps for iPad would clarify what we, the users need to do. Remember, you are communicating with those who have migrated from Quark publishing (for brochures, magazines, and books) to a new world of eBooks and apps--not programmers who are comfortable with your shortcut instructions. Xcode is a development platofrm from Apple and it includes iOS Simulator. Nobody besides Apple can distribute it and therefore our installers can also not install it.

Our documentation should list how to install the Quark Issue Previewer manually in iOS Simulator (it is the only piece of Quark App Studio that is not installed automatically due to above mentioned reason).

So, all you need to do is to
1) Install Xcode by either downloading it for free from the Mac App Store if you are on Lion or from developer.apple.com if you are on Snow Leopard (you need to have an iOS Developer account for this)
2) Unzip "Issue Previewer for iOS Simulator.zip" which you find in the App Studio folder within your QuarkXPress 9 folder.
3) Copy the complete folder (Command+C)
4) Navigate to "/Users/<yourname>/Library/Application Support/iPhone Simulator/<youriOSversion>/Applications/" (if folder 'Applications'does not exist, create it).
5) Paste the folder copied above.

Then start iOS Simulator (which Apple installs in "/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/Applications/" and the Quark Issue Previewer should appear in there (if not, first switch to iPad as a simulated device and make sure the iOS version number correspondents to the one above in blue).

No, Matthias, It doesn't help. Quark Tech Support gave me this instruction rather than your #4 taken out of the documentation: Navigate to Mac HDD >> Users >> Library { hidden } >> Application Support >> iPhone Simulator >> 4.3.2 { version provided by Xcode} >> Applications In case you don’t have Application folder there, you can create one & then paste Issue Previewer for iOS Simulator folder in it. So now I have two folders in this Users/Library/Application Support/iPhone Simulator folder, one named with my Lion iOS version 10.7.3, and one named with my Xcode version 4.3 (not 4.3.2 as described above), and both with the unzipped Issue Previewer for iOS Simulator result file. But the problem is the same. There's still no /Developer folder on my hard drive--and I ran the Xcode 4.3 installer downloaded from Apple. It put the Xcode application and its files in my Macintosh HD/Applications folder but didn't create the one you describe in your message in the paragraph following item 5 in your list. As communicated, what the documentation says is not only shortcut, it is wrong. Whatever you expect Xcode to install, it's not doing it in the version that Apple is downloading now. Thanks, Robert

indeed Apple changed the installation procedure with Xcode 4.3 from Mac App Store:

So, when you say you found both versions of iOS Simulator, do you mean that despite copying the Quark Issue Previewer folder into the rigth folder, it doesn't display?

By the way, the different version numbers of the folder correspondent to the version number of iOS that you select inside iOS Simulator. Have you tried choosing the exact same one in both?

Hi Matthias, I didn't "find" them. The zipped Previewer for iOS Simulator was in the Quark 9.2 folder, as described. I unzipped it there, and copied the folders as you described. After that, I created two Application folders, each with the unzipped Issue Previewer for iOS Simulator files in them in the location in my User/Library/Applications Support/ iPhone Simulator folder, one in the 10.7.3 folder, and one in the 4.3 folder. But nothing like what you describe happens when you download XCode and run its installer. You said, "Then start iOS Simulator (which Apple installs in "/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/Applications/" and the Quark Issue Previewer should appear in there..." I have launched XCode independently successfully, but I have no Developer folder on my main drive, and hence no iOS simulator application in it to launch. Robert

now I understand, you don't find iOS Simulator.

It seems that in Xcode 4.3 Apple has moved that too from the previous locations, so yes, our documentation needs an update for people using Xcode 4.3.

Here's how to find iOS Simulator:

1. Go to ~/Applications, and right-click Xcode.
2. Select “Show Package Contents”. A folder opens.
   
3. Browse through the folder structure to "Contents/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/Applications/"
4. Here's the “iOS Simulator.app”,
   best to add it to the dock, so that you do not need to go through these steps again.
5. Close all the folders, you won't need them anymore.
6. Start iOS Simulator from the Dock.

Hi Matthias, Not quite. I have successfully followed the above instructions and been able to launch the iOS Simulator application. I have also followed the documentation (App Studio 9.2 Guide) instructions on setting the hardware device (Hardware > Device > iPad). But the next instruction (7 In the iOS Simulator, swipe to the left to display the second screen if necessary to reveal the "Issue Previewer" icon) has no "swipe left" functionality to access the "Issue Previewer: icon, so there's no way to open my .zave file. I tried drag and drop of the .zave file to the open window and get the message: "Download failed: Safari cannot download this file" Robert

great, so we are making progress.

Can you check again please that you installed the complete folder with all of its content in the right directory? The complete path looks like this under Lion with Xcode 4.3:

/Users/<yourname>/Library/Application Support/iPhone Simulator/5.0/Applications/Issue Previewer for iOS Simulator/

(and in there are four files/folders, namely Documents, Library, myKiosk-Quark and tmp)

And then launch iOS Simulator, switch it to iPad, quit and launch again (sometimes apps only register the second time you launch).

Does it still not display?

Matthias, Regretfully, no. When I quit simulator and relaunched, the app for Previewer still does not appear. All of the items you identify are in the "...5.0/Applications/Issue Previewer for iOS Stimulator" folder. BTW: the myKiosk application gives a message that it does not run on my Lion Mac. Did you know that? Robert

Hi Robert,

yes, it won't run on Lion as it's an iOS application, so it needs iOS to run (when you double click it, OS X will grab it and not the Simulator environment).

May I ask what version of QuarkXPress you are running, so did you apply the latest update to 9.2.0.2? You can only see that in the Auto Updater Control Panel.

Also the ZIP "Issue Previewer for iOS Simulator.zip" should be from Feb 10. And a Get Info on myKiosk-Quark should say v1.5.

And maybe a restart helps?

No, I have not installed the 9.2.0.2 update--didn't even know it existed. I am installing it now, and will restart after. I'll check the other two and get back to you. Robert

Matthias, The ZIP file for the Previewer is dated February 09, not February 10. Is that the right one, or do I need to get another one (and where, if so?) MyKiosk is v1.5. How do I get MyKiosk into the simulator, or is that necessary? Robert

you get MyKiosk-Quark into the iOS Simulator by copying it to the Library/Application Support/... path.

I just tried the exact steps with a 10.7.3 machine not having seen Xcode yet and it worked just like that.

I will send you the updated Quark Issue Previewer via eMail, though I doubt that this is it.

Hi Matthias, After some tweaking and your helpful tip about a missnamed file folder, we now have the iPad Simulator and an operating Issue Previewer, for which I give many thanks for your persistence and helpful aid. Thank yoiu. I suggest that immediate steps be taken to correct or at least flag the differences we jointly discovered in the installment steps as described in the current documentation for installation of Simulator and Previewer and in practice following Apple's decision to conform the XCode and Simulator installations to the same structure used for other applications--which made the entire HD/Developer path no longer apply. If others are having difficulty getting their software going so that they can build and test apps in Apple's simulator invironment, reading the issues in this entire thread will prove very helpful before they begin their installation. Again, Thanks to Matthias for making it possible.
