Hi there,
Append or Thumbnail drga is not onyl to repair broken documents, it also helps rebuild elements according to the newest version.
When you open an old document (say 3.3) then QuarkXPress 9 emulates the old typography engine, old box creation rules etc. to let you reproduce the document as close as possible. Of course old fonts and other 90's elements may stand in the way to get a 100% facsimile.
When you want to continue producing with an older document, then it is good advice to rebuild at least the type engine (holding option key when opening with Open dialog). If you have some older slugs or other things that might make the document behave funny (as some elements come from 3, others from 4, then again some from 6 or 7) then thumbnail dragging or appending is a good last remedy.
