Creating a keyboard shortcut for Export to PDF

I've seen a lot of folk bemoaning the lack of keyboard shortcuts for menu items. However, this can be done fairly easily in Leopard. I have created a shortcut to Export to PDF... but this can be done for any menu item.

    • Just open System Preferences/Keyboard & Mouse/Keyboard Shortcuts

    • click the + , select Quark from the application dropdown menu

    • In the menu title dialogue, type Layout to PDF…
    the dots must be an ellipsis i.e., alt ;

    • Type your preferred shortcut in the box

    • Quit Quark and open it again. The shortcut should now be there

    Cheers,

    Graeme :)

That would also probably apply to both Tiger and Panther I'd think. I have made a few non-standard keyboar shortcuts for XPress 6.x in OSX 10.3.9.

Why didn't you just use the arrow at the bottom of the app? V8 that is... no mousework :-)

You are just too clever. I thought that was a graphic to direct my attention to my fabulous layout.

Dont you guys preferto Print to PDF instead of Layout Export to PDF?

Cause the pdf file produced this way is lighter... keeping all the quaity.

Try it... you wont be disappointed... But dont forget to install QuarkCUPS or it wont produce any file.

Thats the same, man. That's the same, but with double effort.

Hi All, I don't think I've created anything at all. I just discovered recently that Ctrl-F1 (on a Mac) is a shortcut to Export as PDF. I must admit I've disabled the F-keys for a long time in the System Prefrences. So maybe it won't work on any machine.

Maybe. But it's been my experience that anything I create using the Adobe PDF printer (printing to PDF) doesn't work for me. I have far more control with what I want (need) using Distiller job options.

Distiller options are embedded in Quark if you print to Adobe PDF Printer. Exactly the same. Try both ways and confirm that you get exaclty the same PDF file. The only difference is that the way you do it requires one more operation. But it's just drag 'n drop, so it's not an hard one heheh.

Seriously, you should try. I know it's a pain to put pdf printer working (dont forget to install quarkCUPS),but once it's done, work will be easyer.

    Cheers.

    Hi, vhall,

QuarkXPress 8.1 adds a standard key to Export as PDF (Command+Option+P).

Re: Creating a keyboard shortcut for Export to PDF

Is there any way to change the keyboard command for temporarily accessing the zoom tool?

Re: Creating a keyboard shortcut for Export to PDF

Hi Florie! What is your aim exactly? The zoom can be accessed via Ctrl-drag (or Ctrl-Shift-drag depending on your settings: Preferences > Application > Input settings, Control key, Key press activates Zoom or Contextual menu; Ctrl-Shift activates the opposite function). Pressing Z key on the keyboard activates the Zoom tool provided you are not working on text at the moment (a good trick is to press Esc key prior to pressing Z key so you escape any selection or box). Do you need further help?

Re: Creating a keyboard shortcut for Export to PDF

Thank you for the "Esc" tip. I'm finding that I'm accidentally typing a "t" in my text boxes when I'm trying to get to the Text TOOL (and other misadventures). The new Quark (new to someone who had 6.5) seems cumbersome in many ways, and since I use the Zoom feature so frequently, I'm not happy that I lost the one-key (Command) option. I could go on ... but that would be off-topic! :) (Still trying to understand why sometimes a picture changes size in one direction and not the other ... )
