    Smart Quotes in v7.2

I can't turn off my Smart Quotes. Even when this option is turned off in the preferences, Quark still treats all quotes as the same (i.e. doesn't differentiate between open quotes, close quotes, curly quotes or straight quotes).

Is this a documented bug? Is there a patch for this?

    LG

P.S. Is there a way to search the forums by topic? I couldn't figure it out.

    Smart Quotes in v7.2

Thanks very much for locating the Seach option form me - but what about my bigger problem regarding the Smart Quotes that don't seem to turn off?

I'm not sure what you mean by that. Are you talking about using find/change?

    Smart Quotes in v7.2

Yes, as part of my preflighting process, I go through the document to make sure that there are no extra spaces preceding and following quotation marks, as well as checking that nothing has been copied and pasted from emails, etc, with the wrong types of apostrophes and quotation marks. Version 6 was able to distinguish between a prime and an apostrophe, but Version 7 does not, even with Smart Quotes turned off.

Unfortunately, I don't have v7, so I can't offer any help, but it would be a shame if that feature was lost. I do what you described too.

The feature is there. It just doesn't seem to work. I am wondering if anybody else has had this experience and whether this is a known bug.

I am confused, though. As a moderator of/contributor to this forum, do you not have the most up-to-date software?

I'm not a moderator, I'm a user like you. Anyone can contribute to this forum, and you are correct that I do not have the most up-to-date software. I have what the company I work for uses. There are actually lots of people who still use Quark 6, 5, even some who use 4.

    Hello,
We are aware of the issue with Find/Change when Smart Quotes is off. This issue is fixed in our upcoming maintenance release.

    Scott,

Thanks for responding. Do you have any idea when this release will be? Also, I trust it won't cost?

All I can say is that it will be coming very soon. And yes, it is a free update for QuarkXPress 7 users.

It is a tad annoying that this wasn't fixed in the 7.2 update, as it was something I posted for 7.01 a while ago. Oh well, you are busy people after all!

    Smart Quotes in v7.2

I remember a post pre one of the several forum purges that mentioned the inabliity of v7 to distinguish between straight and 'curly' quotes when doing a find/replace.

For me this is major and although I'm hooked on v7.2 this particular problem is a real annoyance. As you mentioned previous versions can tell the difference.

At home I use 7.2 and since I ceased trading running my own business I don't do much by way of major work there, but here in the office (I'm a wage slave now) we still use 6.52 and frankly something like this, though it sounds minor, would make us hesitate to update to v7 sadly, in all other ways I find v7 vastly superior to v6.

Hope that fix is coming soon because I've recently been tasked to look at upgrading all the hardware and software in the studio and this will, of course, include consideration to update our 7 or 8 copies of v6 to v7, or to leave them be. My plan is to use the new machine we need as a test bed, with v7 on it, to make sure it'll play happily with everything we do, then roll out updates to all the other machines. Can't do that if this wee bug still exists as a lot of the large projects we work on require both straight and curly quotes and the only way to efficiently sort those is with find/replace.

It's comforting to know that there are other punctuation wonks like me out there.
