    Printing using PPDs (I think)

    Hey everyone!

I hope this isn’t a stupid question; I didn’t see any answer doing a search.

I use a Mac, OS 10.4.10 and an Apple Laserwriter 12/640.

I used to have no trouble with this, but recently, pretty much since I started using Quark 7.0 (now 7.3) when I go to print, the correct printer is selected, but dialogue box also has a choice for “Device Options” and PPD with a drop down menu, with Generic Color already selected. I can scroll down the list and find my printer, but I never used to have to mess with this and would like to get it set that way permanently, or as the default. I can’t find a choice in Quark, and not in Mac OS either. This may not even be a Quark specific question, but I only see the choice while printing from Quark.

Many thanks for anyone who replies,

    Brian

Place the PPDs you want to use in a New Folder somewhere. Under the Utility Menu>Manage PPDs>Click on Use Auxillary>Locate the folder you created and your done.

    Printing using PPDs (I think)

    Thanks Peter!

    That did it!

Now if only someone could tell me how to bring PICT pictures into Quark XPress 7.3. I use an equation program that saves equations in PICT format, and was able to just copy and paste into Quark versions 3.x to 6.x, with excellent results. Version 7.x can’t use PICTs at all. Jaggy onscreen and printing, and can’t be copied and pasted back in to the equation program for adjustment. I’m a math teacher and that allowed me to make alternate versions of tests without keeping hundreds of separate files; the test itself with equations pasted into picture boxes was good enough.

    Thanks again Peter!

There was a question exactly like this a while back, but I can't seem to find it. In any case the short answer is that the Quark engineers changed the code in XPress. Yes, you used to be able to do this, but with version 7 this was changed. PICT is a format in page layout programs that is going bye-bye. Windows systems do not support it and more and more Mac users just don't use it.

It has also been reported that this does not work well on Windows systems.

In any case, you are almost certainly aware that this is a bad idea right? Better to save out an EPS (or TIF) and "IMPORT" the file. That way there is a link to the file, your XPress document does not become bloated in file size, and you don't run the risk of corrupt image previews.

    Hi Erik!

Thanks for the info. I do know it isn’t an ideal method, certainly from the professionals standpoint, but these files are for my personal use only. I like to make a test and then 1-3 variations on it, where the equations have only been changed by perhaps one number, such as 3x+8 for one and 3x+6 for another. If I have to do as you suggest, if a test had 50 different equations, I’d have to save 150 individual files and place them; so much more pleasant to just copy and paste, for which I dedicated buttons on a trackball.

Aside from the inconvenience problem, my equation program, MathType (by Design Science) will also save as GIF and EPS, but I can’t get either of them to work with XPress even by saving a file and importing it the proper way. Since I bought version 7 at academic pricing, which was cheaper than paying the upgrade fee, I am able to use both version 6 and 7 at the same time, but I’d sure like to abandon version 6.

Thanks for your help Erik; you’re a real asset on the forum.
