Snow Leopard Quark 7.5 fonts shifting Issues

I was on 10.5.8 and qurak 7.31. I upgraded Quark to 7.5 and upgraded to 10.6 (Snow Leopard).

Now when I open documents made pre-upgrade my fonts are moving from where they were. To a new lower positon. examples:

Before Update. 10.5.8 and Quark 7.31

After Update. 10.6 and Quark 7.5

The blue is becuase the text is highlighted during the screen capture. The way I got these captures is that I have 2 macs at my business. One is updated, one isn't. Other than the update, the 2 machines are identical. This is actually the same file on our server open at the same time on both machines.

This is very bad!

I can't have the type in the hunderds of layouts I've created in the past 10 years in Quark suddenly shifting around. It would take untold hours to fix everything. And then what if someone who hasn't updated opens my "updated" files? Will it shift back?

Like I said this is the exact same file. It lookes like baseline shift has been applied or vertical center is on, but it's not. What is going on?

Will Quark 7 run on one of those new Acer Netbooks?

(Mac OS 10.6 only) In an Interactive layout, if you create a Video object and choose a local (not external) movie file, then export the layout as an SWF file, the video displays incorrectly in the SWF file. (12450)
(Mac OS 10.6 only) If you try to export a layout as PostScript (File > Print > Printer > choose Save as PostScript from PDF button) to a shared network location, the file prints to the default printer instead. (7731)
(Mac OS 10.6 only) You cannot print a layout that includes in imported raster EPS file to an HP Color LaserJet® 5500 PS. (11549)

No mention of the fonts shifting issue. Has anyone contacted support about the font shifting issue? Quark was obviously unaware of it before SL came out and they show no evidence of reading their forums. A respone would be nice.

If noone has contacted them about the type shifting issue then I might tomorrow, but I'm probably just going to get a BS response that 7.5 isn't supported under SL. And I'm not too keen on the idea of giving this compnay any more money right now.

Quark 8 preview resolution

hi, we switched to quark 8 from quark 6.5, but now having a big problem in our workflow.

we are creating huge maps in freehand and load this maps as eps into quark layouts. in quark 6.5 the preview was good enough to see details we need to put some extra information on the map in the layout.

but now, since we use quark 8, the preview is very bad. the following picture shows the differences. the first row shows one sample, the second row another sample.

first picture in column shows the preview up to version 6.5. in the second column, the eps-preview is created by quark (Preferences->EPS->Generate). The third column shows the preview with the setting EPS->Embedded.

Any ideas how to increase the quality?

Selecting individual grid elements in tables

I'm gradually warming to Quark tables, but there's still one feature that baffles me.

My job requires very simple tables. 3 columns, 3 rows. The top row is coloured in a dark tint. Columns 1 and 3 are coloured in a light tint. The only actual grid line I want to see is the bottom one. It needs to be 1pt in weight and coloured as the dark tint.

No matter how hard I try, I can't click on the bottom rule. So I select horizontal grid, make them ALL 1pt, then I can click on the 'middle' one and set it to 0, but I can't set the top one to 0. Is there a trick for clicking on these rules? I know it's easier if they already have a weight but I just can't make it happen. (In ID I could do it very easily....)

PS Forgot to mention - these tables are anchored in a text box, just to make everything really simple!

Automated Find & Replace from Excel???

I have a catalog with approximately 4000 products in a Quark document. Each product has an existing SKU number. The catalog is being re-printed for a different client and needs ALL the SKU numbers to be changed (everything else stays the same). I have an Excel spreadsheet with two columns of information: Column A has the existing SKU number and Column B has the new SKU number. Is it possible to some how automate Quark's Find & Replace feature (or other feature?) to search for each existing SKU number (column A from the spreadsheet) and replace it with its corresponding new SKU number (column B from the spreadsheet) in the Quark document? Replacing each SKU number manually would be a painfully slow process. I only have regular QuarkXPress...NO Quark Server or Dynamic Publishing Products. Thanks, Jon :-)

missing letters in printout after exporting EPS from Quark8 and destillation

Since we use Quark8, there occurs a printing problem with Colorgate Production Server 4. We save the layouts as EPS and then destill them with Acrobat destiller.

In Quark 6.5, there are no problems with destilled PDFs from EPS. When I save the EPS from Quark 8, destill it and send it to the RIP, there are sometimes missing letters in the printed layouts. The PDF looks okay.

When I tell Quark 8 to export the layout as PDFs, the printing problems don't occur.

Problem lies in EPS, because when I import a saved EPS into a layout and then again export layout as PDF and print it, letters are again missing. This tells me, something goes wrong in EPS creation.

I also tried different settings in EPS creation of Quark. Binary, ASCII, Clean-8-Bit...

Any ideas?

What the heck happened to my flipped images?

I have just finished a 480 page book, and it came back from the printers today. 10 seconds after opening the first book I noticed that all images that used the flip horizontal or vertical function in Quark are missing!!!!! It is a black and white jpg file.

During design and proof I used a low res version of the file and an ink jet printer. The images showed up in both print and pdf.

After switching to a high res file, it only shows up when outputting to an ink jet printer, but no one noticed that they were gone in the pdfs because we were so used to seeing them... They also do not show when printing to a postscript color laser printer.

So it seems like a postscript problem based on the fact that the flipped images only show up on a non postscript inkjet, but what would make a flipped jpg vanish just based on resolution?

Both files are jpg, both are greyscale, the only difference is resolution.

I am stumped and VERY angry with myself for not noticing and with Quark for including a function that obviously doesn't work.

Strange Palette display in Snow Leopard (QXP 8.12)

Just noticed after upgrading to 10.6.2 that the palettes display incorrectly. Each button now sits within a grey box, a bug I'm sure.

Trouble with Quark and Excel

We use Windows-based Quark and recently upgraded from Quark 6.1 to Quark 8.02. We publish a LOT of Excel graphs, using the Edit>Import object>Create from file function. In the past we were able to use this to link to the Excel spreadsheet and print high-quality charts. Now the charts are all bitmap images in this new version, and unprintable! Anyone have a workaround for this? Help is greatly appreciated!

Importing Multi-page PDFs

I need to import a multi-page PDF into Quark. Is there an automatic way to do that, or do I need to create a mutli-page Quark document with a picture box on the master page, and then individually import every page of the PDF into each of my Quark pages ... one at a time? I've been experimenting with Quark 8 and InDesign, and InDesign does it better, but I really need (and want) Quark to be able to do it!

Quark 7.5 crashes when trying to move constrained and grouped items . . .

Don't know what is happening here, and am getting really cheesed off with it . . every time I try and moved constrained group items Quark crashes - EVERY FREAKING TIME . . I resent paying Quark £30 to talk to someone . . . so I am here to speak to users who may be able to help me. I am not prepared to upgrade to Quark 8 as that is not an option for me . . . so please Quark employees do NOT suggest it. If no help available then I guess I will have to bite the bullet and go the InDesign route . . . Guess this a desperate cry for help . . . B

Drawing a circle from the center point.

It's been a few years since I've used Quark, but I just got 8.1 and I'm back in the game! Seems that I recall that when you wish to draw a circle and use a defined center point effectively drawing the circle outward, you could press the 'Option' key to accomplish this while dragging. In a PC environment, how is this accomplished now - what key(s) need to be depressed? Thanks!

Slow operation of V8.12 using documents automatically converted from V6.5

We are a weekly community newspaper who started with V4., moved to V5, V6.0, then V6.52. When we learned that Quark no longer supported V6, we upgraded to V8.12 and are having a miserable time with extremely slow execution speed. We are a WindowsXP shop (SP 3) and all our PCs have 4 MB of RAM and dual or quad AMD processor chips running at 2.0 to 2.4 GHz. A typical size of our newspaper is 50-60 11x17" pages. A simple "move" of an ad, whether to a different location on the same page or to a different page, takes 15-20 seconds, which is intolerable. When we upgraded to V8.12, I believe the system automatically converted our V6.52 main document format to that required by V8.12. The file size of our main document is on the order of a few hundred MB, which I'm sure is the cause of the slow operation. We have since defined our "Sports Section" as one document and our "Schools Section" as a different document, but the remaining pages contain "everything else" and are the bulk of the newspaper. An important requirement in the "all else" (or "Main") document is that we must be able to easily and quickly move an ad from a specific page to some other page in the Main document.

We publish our newspaper every Wednesday night by combining our three documents into one complete document and generating a PDF from each page and transmitting those PDFs to the FTP site of our outside printing house. The next morning, we open that complete document and strip away the majority of text and photos, resulting in a skeleton that we will add to over the next six days, then publish the result on the following Wednesday night. Did our automatic file conversion leave excess hidden V6.52 system baggage in the V8.12 document that we can eliminate somehow? I tried a thumbnail drag of eight old pages (our latest "School Section") into a new project which produced a file that was 10% smaller than the original file. Moving an ad within it was so fast I couldn't tell whether the new file was any faster than the old, but the load time for opening it took only one-third the time the original document required.

I then tried creating a new document from the "Main File" using the thumbnail drag but could not move beyond the first seven or eight pages. There wasn't new space at the bottom of the new panel to drag any more thumbnails into and the cursor bar on the vertical right edge was positioned at the bottom of its travel, so I was stuck.

Has anyone experienced the slow execution speed problems we are having and figured a way around them? Many thanks.

quark file permissions - a definitive answer?

I asked this question a year ago, both on here and directly to quark support.

Why does Quark save files and collect images with permissions: owner: Read Write group: Read others: None

Even though Mac OS X defaults for files created by an application are Owner: Read Write Group: Read Others: Read

A year ago I was using Mac OS X 10.5 and Quark 7 (through to 7.5) and at the time quark tech support said they couldn't reproduce this and gave up!

But now I have a brand new laptop with Mac OS X 10.6.1 fresh install, the first thing I installed was Quark 8.1 and still it saved and collected images with the wrong permissions, ( saved to local drive no network involved)

So it was clearly not related to my set up as was suggested.

Why does quark save with these permissions when all other applications follow the default permissions set in uMask settings.

I'm not really looking for a solution this time, just an explanation would be good

XPress 8, How can odd numbered pages exist on the Left side of the spine?

In All previous versions of Xpress, Odd numbered pages are Right hand Pages and Even numbered pages are Left hand Pages. We built our workflow and training around that, and the fact that when you add or delete a single page, that the page layout automatically reflows. Now, in XPress 8, that does not happen and the page layout has to be adjusted manually, and you have to move pages back and forth across the spine in the Page Layout Palette, because an odd numbered page can now be a left hand page and vice versa...UGH!!

Finding my serial number?

Hello. I work for a newspaper and we use QuarkXpress 6.5 on our computers. We are going to upgrade some of them to Quark 8. However, on one of the computers, we cannot locate the serial number to upgrade from. Is there a way, from within Quark, to retrieve our serial number? Or can we upgrade from a serial number off a different computer, as long as we discontinue use of that particular license? I've been wading through paperwork for hours today trying to find that serial number, and it somehow got misplaced. I likely have the original box, just don't know what serial number is registered to that computer.

Always modified after opening?

Every time I open a document, regardless of whether I had just saved it recently or not, Quark displays the dot in the Close dot as if it's been modified. I often open docs to glance over them and want to be able to close without a dialog box saying This Document has been Modified. I've tried turning off every XTension and continue to have this problem. I'm running Q7.5 on Leopard.

Just discovered that If I import an Xpress Tags file with a style sheet name "Footnote Text" into a document which has a style sheet named "footnote text" the Xpress Tags style sheet is ignored. Changing the style sheet name in the Quark document seems impossible, "footnote text" remains "footnote text" even after changing it to "Footnote Text'. I'm having to import several times to ensure that style sheet names have the correct case. I'm sure this never happened in Quark 7.

QuarkXPress 6.0 language problem

Hi there. I was in the middle of laying out part of our magazine in QuarkXPress 6.0 and all was fine until about pg. 30, when I wasn't able to save the document any more. This error message came up when I tried to save: "This project can not be saved in Single Language format because it contains layouts with paragraphs in multiple languages." Can anyone offer any guidance? We have been using this file as a template for this section of the magazine for a # of years, so I'm wondering if it's corrupted, etc. I import various Word files, so I'm also wondering if that is an issue. Thanks so much.

Way to change toolbar & menu background colors?

Just wondering, does anyone know a way to "skin" Quark 8 or at least change the background colors for the toolbar, or at the very least, the palletes like Page Layout, Colors, Layers, etc.. They seem pretty dark and I would like to make them lighter.. Many people in our office are complaining about this.. it would be great to be similar to the way they were in Quark 7 (just white).. It is NOT the brightness/contrast of our monitor.. just a personal preference..

Anyone have info or insight on this?
