Hans: I'm with you regarding Xpress preferences, and have spent years trying to resolve various preferences trouble specific to Xpress (various versions beginning with 4.x). Today a print output style (one I use nearly continuously) is causing a crash, and that's why I'm even on the forums.

Regarding tech support: I wouldn't bother them and they'll only repeatedly tell you to trash your preferences and try again. At least Mattias indicated in a later post in this thread that you may want to copy your preferences to revert back to favorite settings, a step that support almost never mentions. I've even paid for Quark Assurance with no better success, just a higher level of not solving the problem.

And after the 'self-support' option wouldn't allow me to log in (yes, I tried to resolve this several times) I simply opted to change my user name and go from there. "I think Quark stink." Enough said?

Mattias and Quark: I will not be recommending an upgrade to xpress 8 (tested, similar troubles) and we already considered the dynamic publishging thing and were totally unimpressed by being sold a product that didnt' deliver. And since employee training will be needed, anyhow,, this looks like a good time to consider a competitor product.

Problem solved: The problem was a ColorSync profile. After removing this profile the ‘hang’ at quit is solved.

Hello Matthias, I reported everything to support. Did not hear from them. What i mean is this: with FontAgent working: ther is a conflict (window unexpected quit Q 8). Without FontAgent this problem is gone. I thought: it can be a problem with fontcache or the FontAgent library. I reinstalled FontAgent and build a new library. Again there was this problem So there must be a conflict with FontAgent Pro and Quark (or other font manage utilities and Quark 8)

I am not sure I understand. If you remove FontAgent Pro completely and QuarkXPress still shows you a "nuexpected quit", what makes you assume there's an issue with FontAgent Pro?

As you can see, forums are not a great way to deeply troubleshoot, just too many paramaters to ask. As you are in contact with our tech support, please keep them informed about everything and work with them directly. Once you issues are resolved (or can't be resolved), you can of course post the final outcome here, if you like.

Hello Matthias, When i open FontAgent pro the Quark window ‘unexpected quit‘ is showing but Quark does not quit. I totaly removed FontAgent Pro from my machine and did a fresh new installation of it. Again the same problem is there. I cleaned Font cache, without results. Using a font management utility is needed. I don't want all my fonts loaded in the system.

I assumed you were using an XTension, as you also mentioned Suitcase. What's not working with FontAgentPro in regards to QuarkXPress 8 please if you are not using an XT?

It is hard to recommend font management software without knowing your exact requirements. There's a free font managing utility for OS X though that I know of and that seems to work in several workflows. It is called Font Explorer X from Linotype.

In case you need this one day, they also have XTs for QuarkXPress 6 and 7, just not yet for 8.

Hello Matthias, I don't have any other party xtension using with Quark 8. Only the xtensions delivered with Quark 8. I am using FontAgent Pro to manage my systemfonts (not the xtension of FontAgent). Is there any information about conflicts wit FontAgent Pro and Quark 8? I found out that Quark is working more proper without FontAgent. If this does: is there any other font manage utility that does not conflict wit Q 8? I can't find any information about this. Thanks, Hans

Quark 8 installer put the ‘preferences’ folder in the Quark 8 folder, not in users!

The installer doesn't create preferences, neither a preference folder nor any preferences. It is solely QuarkXPress which looks for preference folders and preferences and - in case there are none - creates them .

There's a simple test you can do:
1. Quit QuarXPress.
2. Remove the Preferences folder inside the application folder of QuarkXPress AND the "QuarkXPress 8" folder in the user folder (/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences/Quark/QuarkXPress 8). Remove the folders, not just their content.
(With remove I mean move them e.g. to the desktop in case you have customized your preferences and want to restore them after the test.)
3. Restart QuarkXPress and watch the two folders.

QuarkXPress will recreate the folder in the user preference folder and preferences inside them.
(To restore your backup, just quit QuarkXPress and replace the preferences with the ones you saved.)

Suitcase also does not support Quark 8.

Like with other upgrades (=major version jumps) of QuarkXPress 8, the XTensions interface changed. Though we'd love to keep the interface the same forever, fundamental changes in major version like e.g. in 8 unicode enabling the whole application internally (so that you can use unicode characters inside style sheet names and filename/path for example) forced this change. We are working closely with our development partners to resolve this as quick as possible and have them release XTs compatible to 8.

Just installed a copy on my Mac Mini (also the latest Leopard version). Even on this computer Quark 8 won't operate proper. Perhaps it's me. But honest: i never have had problems with programs exept Quark. All the rest works fine. All programs and fonts are legal and clean installed. The best and latest Macs. Lots of memory. I have had so much problems with Quark 7. Documents that won't open the other day for I don't know what reason. Hours of work destroyed. Different spacings of type between different versions of Q 7 and more. I thought: lets give it a last chance the reviews are good so far. This has to be revolutionary. But why! does it not operate proper directly. This is not a beta version: it's a paid upgrade. This has to work fine without bugs, tested over and over. On none of my computers it's working without problems. I spend to many - non productive - time with Quark. If the problems won't be solved quick an proper, i just want my money back and swich to Indesign. I'am afraid of other hidden bugs. I am making my money with design. Now i must use Q 7 again and it's like playing roulette. Waiting for the new failure.

Sorry Matthias, but it's not correct what you are saying. I installed a copy of Quark 8 on my brand new MacBook pro (Mac OS 10.5.4 clean instal). I just wanted to find out where's the problem. Quark 8 installer put the ‘preferences’ folder in the Quark 8 folder, not in users! This install looks more stable, but it is not possible to make general changes of margin colour and guide colour in preferences. After quit and start Quark again the margin and guide colour is back to it's original settings. I also find out that Fontagent Pro is not working good with Quark 8. There is no update available yet. Suitcase also does not support Quark 8. Is there any information about the working of this font programs and Quark 8?

yes, deleting preferences is the first thing everybody should try if QuarkXPress has start up issues.

As Hans had written that he already tried this and as QuarkXPress creates new preferences every time it starts up if it doesn't find any preferences, my assumption was that it is probably wrong permissions of the preferences folder.

Hans' issue seems to be something else; he is already in contact with Tech Support.

However, there is an urban myth that creating a preference folder inside the application folder solves all issues. Therefore allow me to take this opportunity to hopefully clarify it:

Urban myth about preferences

QuarkXPress stores a lot of its setting in preferences. It first looks in its app folder whether there's a folder called Preferences with prefs. If there are, it takes these preferences. If not, QuarkXPress looks into the preferences folder inside the user folder of the OS whether there's a preferences folder. If yes, it takes these, if not it creates them there.

So when you create a preference folder in the app folder of QuarkXPress it basically has the same effect as deleting the preferences in the user folder, as QuarkXPress starts up, finds a Preferences folder which is empty and creates new prefs.

Therefore it looks as if creating a preferences folder in the app folder solves issues. And it does in this case, therefore the myth. Remember, this will work only the first time; the next time there's an issue with the prefs, you do need to delete the prefs (in the app folder).

So why two locations for preferences?

So many people ask us why does Quark not have the preferences folder in the app folder by default? Well, it is easy: Preferences should always be stored in the user folder as multiple users using the same machine else share preferences.

Example, if you have two users, who never log on at the same time, it at least will confuse (I create prefs, you log on after me and everything looks like I left it). Even worse, it could also cause issues (as all users need write permissions to a folder inside the Applications folder, if you don't have it, you can't start QuarkXPress).
And if two users log on at the same time, it is even the worst you can do to have preferences in the app folder: As the first user starting QuarkXPress locks the prefs, the second user cannot start QuarkXPress anymore.

Therefore preferably preferences are stored in the user folder unless you use the machine just by yourself with one user. Then it doesn't really matter. Also, a lot of people prefer the prefs in the app folder, as they feel it is faster to access.

So far makes sense?

There is one exception where you should have your preferences folder in the app folder, which is when you have several instances of the same version of QuarkXPress installed on the same machine. So not QuarkXPress 7 and 8 (different versions of QuarkXPress use different preference folder in the user folder), but e.g. two versions of QuarkXPress 8 with different sets of XTensions. Here leaving the preferences folder in the user folder would mean that both QuarkXPress 8 access the same prefs and you run into issues again.

The latter is also the reason why when running pre-releases you should create a preference folder inside the app folder (as you are getting an alpha and a beta and the prefs format might have changed).

Is still everything clear? ;-)

By the way, QuarkXPress 8 under Windows Vista DOES NOT support a folder inside the application folder anymore.

Bottom line:

Startup issues:
1. Deleting preferences is a good tip in case QuarkXPress doesn't start up. By default they are in /Users/<user name> /Library/Preferences/Quark/QuarkXPress <version number>/
2. Therefore having a backup of your preferences is a good idea.
3. If that doesn't help make sure you have read/write access to the preference folder, e.g. by looking at Info or Repairing Permissions.

Where should preferences be stored?
-> If you have several users using the same machine, they SHOULD be stored in the users folder (which is by default, nothing you need to do)
-> If you have several instances of the same version of QuarkXPress installed (so two v8, NOT v7 and v8), create a folder called Preferences in all folders where QuarkXPress resides. If you are the only user, fine, if there are more users, make sure they all have read/write access to that folder.

Thanks, but i have done this yet, Also repaired permissions on disc. Quark is working on it. Let's hope i get this operational. I shure don't know the problem all my aplications are working fine. (There is an older version of QuickTime in the Quark installer folder. I use 7.5. Could that be the problem?
