HI,

I've been using Quark for about 6 years now (4 years professionally) laying out books for print, but until recently I've been asked to design and layout for the amazon kindle. Since i work with print, i've never needed to work or look into "tags".

has anyone had any experience with layouting books for both print and kindle? if so, could you point me in the right directions.Thanks! - GB

Setting up XML DTD's and quark templates

Hi,

I'm trying to find help on how to create xml DTD's and templates for Quark 6.5

at the moment i download data from my website in xml format and then i want this to be paginated into quark in a template that is created using a dtd that identifies the tags within the downloaded xml.

what i would like to know is how to set up these dtd's so that i can control what order the data is displayed in etc
and also have the power to create different templates.

Any ideas on where i can look for help?

Cascading Menus

Hi Im currently trying to sort out a cascading menu on my html site. I can kinda of get it right but the sub menu doesnt disaper once you have clicked off it. also how do u add a link within the site to the sub menu options? cheers Simon

QuarkXpress 8 XML placeholder window

I'm trying out the test drive version of Quark 8 and can't seem to find the placeholder window for XML files. With vrs. 7 you needed to download an Xtension, is this going to be the same for vrs. 8? Please can someone help? TIA.

Skipping empty tags?

Good morning :)

I'm currently working on a rather huge project and need to use XML on it. Well, so far everything seems to work just fine.

My question is, though, if it is possible to skip empty elements/tags/placeholder?

Lets pretend my XML looks like this:

<hobby_one>drawing</hobby_one>

<hobby_two>eating</hobby_two>

Now, I have a second guy in that XML-file, who has only one hobby, so <hobby_two> would be emtpy. But I already use a placeholder for <hobby_two>, so Quark gives me an emtpy line.

It wouldn't be a problem if it would always be only one empty line, but my list needs about 8 "hobby"-elements and has roughly 300 people in it =( And the <phone> always needs to be at the end of the list.

So, is it possible to tell Quark (7.31) "if you would have an empty line there, ignore it and go on with the next filled element"?

I'd be happy if someone could help me with this =J

XML import in QuarkXPress 7

Greetings,

I have to import some large XML documents into QuarkXPress version 7 before this month ends. I've seen the instructions explained in this topic, but they don't apply to version 7.

I've tried to import the XML file by choosing the 'Import' menu, and I get a message that makes reference to a 'fatal error', but it doesn't explain where the error comes from.

Also, I don't know how to import or attach the DTD (Document Type Definition). I've been given three DTDs that I'll supposedly have to use for each XML file, is that possible?

Since I'm responsible for doing this without having been given any proper education on XML, let alone on QuarkXPress, I'd be very grateful if someone could enlighten me on how to import large documents with text and graphics into QuarkXPress 7.

i have quark pages and i want to create the xml file with the specified format, so that i want to read through the c# and create xml by it (without using extensions).

is there any possiblity to read the the co-ordinates of the place holders(boxes) of quark file, if yes than how i read them with the image place holders.

in xml file, a text with carriage returns as it should be encrypted?!

xml file will be imported in QuakXpress with XML XTensions and I would like that the carriage returns are respected.

XML Export does it exist in 8?

I've read a lot of information about being able to export a quark document to XML, but I can't seem to find this capability in v8. I found an XTension for v7 that claims to do it, but I don't think that will work with v8. Can someone dumb this down for me or explain how to do it? I'm not a quark user, I've got to be able to capture some information from the final published product of our marketing staff.

How to import XML/ETMv2 coded disk in Quark 7

I'm working in a publishing industry for 9 years and we do more work in InDesign than Quark. ETMv2 and Quark 7 are our client requirements and I MUST need to learn this process. We did a lot of XML/ETM in Quark 4 but I don't have idea or find any to explain the process on this higher version. We already prepared ETMv2 compliant coded disk and my only problem is how to pour this on Quark 7.

In InDesign, there's an "import xml" option, then we map the tag to styles. I did not find anything like this in Quark 7 or am I missing something? extension perhaps?

I will greatly appreciate any help.

I want to create an interactive mailshot to email to my customers. Does anyone know what format I should save this as, or even if it can be done in Quark? And also how I can insert it into an email so that it will display. Do I have to upload it to my website and link it somehow? I am using Quark 7.3. Any help would be most welcome.

XML import and styles does not work

Hello,
You can import an XML file in QuarkXPress and apply styling to the content. In oreder to import an XML File
1 Create a new document in Quark.
2. Go to windows>show Placeholders.
3. In the Placeholder palette , Import the DTD by clicking
on the first icon. and it would show you the dtd file under
structure tab.
4. Click on the second icon and import the xml file and that would show you the name of the XML file next to the right of the icons.
5. create a text box and drag the XML tag and drop it in the text box and it would show you the place holder in the text box .
6. now apply styling to the placeholders.
7. then toggle placeholder/content and it would show you the content in the XML file with the applied styles.

This ought to work. But it doesn't. The styles are not applied.
Any idea why? Xpress 6.52, Mac OS 10.4.9

Quark 5 XML Import problem

Im trying to import xml with internal DTD in Quark 5 via the XML import avenue.quark XT.

I do all the stuff I learned from XML Import guide, but I can not insert the hard return after each row of data.

In XML import.pdf it says that return or any character can be inserted before ending bracket or after opening bracket of the placeholder element, there is even a picture displaying how this is done, but that just is not possible - I cannot type anything within the brackets, only between elements. Why?

I need that cause I need to create a lot of soccer rankings tables.

I am getting: Palermo962Napoli953...

I need:
Palermo 9 6 2
Napoli 9 5 3
...

encoding issues

When we were using quark 6.5, we had box text like "<v6.50><e2><c"Black"><v6.50><e0> <*p(0,0,0,13,0,4)><z11kf"Clearface Regular">With countertops, what<\#213>s on the ". We are attempting to migrate to quark 7 and using xml to communicate with are quark server. We are using: <?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\"?> and I am converting the into <\#213> for the xml to go through. When the pdf comes back, the text in the pdf has character 213 but it is not the mac roman character for the apostrophe, it is a Õ which is from the ISO-8859‑1 character set, not the mac-roman character set. I have a solution which I do not like which is to translate my mac-roman into iso-8859-1 myself. The above gets converted to ’. This works but I would rather be able to use are current box text data the way it is now. The server is on a mac and the calling software is on a pc. Does anyone have any suggestions or solutions to this? Thanks, Brian

QuarkXPress 7 (Intel MBP, Leopard) freezing or crashing constantly with XML

I've tried everything I can think of to troubleshoot Quark's continuous poor performance, but can not manage to get through even 5 minutes of work with avenue.quark (setting up an XML template, making rule sets, creating XML document). I have disabled all XTensions not required for this task; I have repaired permissions; I have experimented with freshly-made and very simple, short documents; I have created a new user account. And today I attempted to work on another user's computer: also a MacbookPro with Leopard and latest version of XPress. It was the same story! I was unable to accomplish anything. . . .

My ultimate goal is simply to create a template for fairly simple documents which will be converted for the web each month. There are no images, just a dozen style sheets, and fewer fonts.

Any assistance, suggestions, or even sympathy would be appreciated.

XML Import Limitation

Hello,

I'm working on a project that requires importing a lot of data (2000+ records) into a Quark document and I want to use the Avenue.quark importing tools. However, past a certain size (~300 KB), the process slows down considerably and sometimes never completes. Has anyone found a work-around for this or a way to import sequentially? (I suspect that the entire xml document is imported, so load increases expotentially based on the file size).

Edit: I should probably specify the environment. I am using Quark 7.31 on Windows XP.

How to delete a DTD from the Placeholders palette???

Everyting's in the subject. I can't seem to delete a DTD I've imported into the Placeholders palette (in this case, it was a DTD integrated to the XML file, but I think I came accross the same problem earlier with an independant DTD).

Please can someone help me?

Export Quark Doc as XML. Please Help!

We are using Quark 6.5 and have a publication we would like to add to a CMS (Content Management System) on a regular basis.

What is the best way to export the document as XML. I've researched avenue.quark and downloaded the XML Plus Xtensions for Quark 6.5. There doesn't seem to be a one-click solution for this. Seems like I need to learn XML to be able to do this...

Our main concern is that the text keep its style. We aren't placing images or graphics, just text.

Is there a difference in avenue.quark and XML Plus? XML Plus says to delete avenue.quark, but didn't know if one is better.

Also, can we do it all at once, or only one story at a time?

OR what is the best way to export only text with HTML tags??? <<<answer that and it would help too!
