New member to this forum - hopefully someone can help me with this problem.

Unfortunately a few weeks ago we were broken into and all our computers were stolen.

As a result we have had to upgrade all our computers, software etc.

All our computers are Intel Macs running OSX 10.5.8 (didn&#39;t go to OSX 10.6 after reading so many disaster stories). We are running Extensis Suitcase Fusion 2.0 with QuarkXPress 8.12. The Macs are new and all programs have been freshly installed.

Being that we are in Graphic Design and need to use Helvetica Neue - I have done the work around to get the Postscript Version to work instead of the OX System Helvetica Neue.

The problem I seem to be experiencing though seems only to be happening in QuarkXpress 8.12 - the Adobe CS4 programs seem to run and display the fonts fine.

In QuarkXPress however the fonts seem to be in the drop down list twice.

For Example (lets use Helvetica Neue but it also happens with other fonts) - it will display in the drop down menu &quot;55 Helvetica Roman&quot; then the same font as &quot;Helvetica 55 Roman&quot; in the same list - basically doubling up.

I have checked in the &quot;Usage&quot; area of Quark to make sure that it isn&#39;t using two different fonts. It tells me both are exactly the same font.

Is there are way to make it show just one name of the font rather than two in QuarkXpress?

I have written to Extensis and they have told me -

&quot;Suitcase Fusion 2 has no control or influence on how fonts are grouped and displayed in Application&#39;s font menus so this is a Quark specific issue.

Activated fonts in Suitcase Fusion 2 are broadcasted to the operating system ( specifically a background process called ATSServer ) then it&#39;s down to the application vendor to determine how new fonts get picked up by the application and how the fonts are grouped within their menus.&quot;

While it is not a major drama - it is annoying.

Any help would be appreciated.

Incorrect leading on one Mac in workgroup

I have a customer with an odd leading issue affecting just one of four users with identical configurations. Setups are Quark 7.5 on OS X 10.5.8 MacPro.

Leading with the default 20% should be 12pt for a 10pt font. On this users&#39; computer the setting is 20%, but it displays at an additional 20% (14.4pt). This can be best demonstrated with this screen capture:

http://www.mitchcohen.org/quarkforum/Sabrina_Quark_leading_issue_2009-10/optima_test.png

The box on the left has Optima 10pt with auto leading. The next box has the leading set to 12pt, and the righthand box is 14.4pt. The expected result is for the first two boxes to match; instead the left and right boxes match with the center using a smaller leading.

Optima happens to be the font used here, but it isn&#39;t specific to the font - several were tried with the same results.

If this same document is moved to another computer in the workgroup, it opens as expected - the first two boxes match, and the box on the right has larger leading. The 12pt and 14.4pt leadings remain as-is; it&#39;s the auto-leading that changes.

I trashed the entire Quark preferences folder (~/Library/Preferences/Quark/QuarkXPress 7.0/), with no change. I also trashed the local copy of Optima and used a fresh copy from a computer operating properly, no change. I confirmed the preferences do show the auto leading at 20% on all computers.

If anyone is curious, the Quark file used to generate the screenshot is here:

http://www.mitchcohen.org/quarkforum/Sabrina_Quark_leading_issue_2009-10/optima_test.qxd

One of the interesting aspects of this to me is the leading is an additional 20%, not 40%.

Everything else on this computer is operating properly.

I&#39;d be much appreciative of any suggestions!

Thanks,

 Mitch

However my new kerning value tables created in Quark 8 and saved as .xml do not work in the same way.
I still do not understand how they dont work when Quark now only allows you to save these kerning value tables as .xml files.
Is there something in Quark preferences that I need to switch on or off to allow these .xml files to actually work?
Point of interest I am using Suitcases XI.

I&#39;m using Linotype Font Explorer Pro&#39;s Quark 8 font plugin.

Now certain layouts are having problems with certain fonts, with regards to spacing. For example:

<a href="http://www.violetmount.com/quark2.png" target="_blank" title="http://www.violetmount.com/quark2.png">http://www.violetmount.com/quark2.png</a>

<a href="http://www.violetmount.com/quark1.png" target="_blank" title="http://www.violetmount.com/quark1.png">http://www.violetmount.com/quark1.png</a>

All these layouts were created in Quark 8 under Leopard, yet they work fine if they&#39;re collected for output, saved down to 7.52 and opened on a Tiger machine.

Others, with different fonts, work with no problems.

Q8 is activating the correct fonts, so I&#39;m wondering if this is a SL issue?

Activated fonts do not appear in Quark 8 font list

Using Snow Leopard. Tiger 10.4.11, QXP 8.0 updated to 8.02, FontBook management only, having three problems:

((1)) doesn&#39;t show the whole font family for most fonts especially TrueType.
((2)) mixes up fonts altogether, shows a regular or semibold font as heavy bold. Strange thing is if I click B on that text it reverts to the correct semibold variant which is hilarious, it&#39;s exactly the other way round. Does this with several fonts.
((3)) Choppy navigation takes ages to scroll, edit a letter or a word irrespective of page number/project complexity as text is concerned. Makes no difference if there are images in that project or not so seems to be related to text manipulation.

What I found is as follows:
- Some system fonts have been removed by mistake. I returned the Mac in what I call a &#39;golden state&#39; by putting back all necessary fonts as originally installed, cleaning all caches, resetting FontBook cache via safe boot, repairing permissions etc. It solved problem no.((3)).
 All fonts passed FontDoctor diagnose.
Tried various schemes to enable or disable fonts through FontBook to no avail, problems ((1)) and ((2)) are still there.
Having read the 8.1 update release notes, it seems this would solve at least problem ((2)) which I&#39;m going to try tomorrow. Will be back with results. Has anyone encountered such problems? Any suggestions more than welcome. I purchased Suitcase some time ago because it was useful when I was given quark files (outputted with fonts) for adverts etc that went into a catalogue. Now every advert file I receive is a PDF. So do I need Suitcase? The program quits without an alert and seems to cause more problems that it solves and I&#39;m not 100% sure that it is compatible with quark 7.31 on a mac running OS10.4.11

The total fonts controlled by Suitcase is only around 200 - if I removed Suitcase from start-up items and moved the fonts into user/libary/fonts etc - would quark, photoshop etc find the fonts when they load? I guess I can always run a font doctor to check if my fonts are healthy.

They have been different fonts, and all are loaded into Font Agent. Some are already activated, some just didn&#39;t auto-activate like they are supposed to. If I manually activate them, they still don&#39;t show up in Quark. I&#39;ve also reloaded all my fonts. The only thing that seems to help is running FontNuke (sometime it takes several tries to clear the caches), but I can&#39;t close everything down and run that everytime I want to open a Quark file! Any idea what&#39;s going on? </p><p>&nbsp;<br /></p>

Missing Font

I work for a newspaper and we just recently upgraded from Quark 6.5 to Quark 8.02 One of the fonts that we use in the newspaper (New Century Schoolbook) always comes up missing when I open the template for the paper. I can click update and the type in the missing font and update it because it is actually there. Is there a way to not have to update all the time? The font is there I don&#39;t know why it shows it missing. I can do it using the keyboard palette on my PowerMac G5, OS 10.5.6, Quark 7.31. But this is for a freelance project and I own an older version of Quark at home. OS 10.4, Intel MacBook, typeface on both is Sabon MT (postscript).<br /><br />The keyboard palette (tried U.S. and U.S. Extended) on my MacBook won’t let me insert the special characters. I did it in Quark 7 at work, saved the file down, but when I opened it in 6.5, the Euro became a question mark and the a with a macron was a blank space.<br /><br />I’ve tried using the function key and other tips and tricks I found online, but none work to give me the two characters.<br /><br />Since the keyboard palette isn’t an option on the MacBook, I can’t switch to another typeface just for those characters and I can’t change the typeface, as the client has been using it for several years and wants to keep it for this book.</p><p><br />Any ideas on how I can work around this? Thank you.<br /></p>

Using expert characters in Open fonts

I am a long-time Quark user (version 6.5), but have recently upgraded my system to 10.5 and installed Fusion 2. I also purchased the Adobe Open font library. I am having trouble with Quark now. How do I get ligatures and old-style figures in the open fonts, such as Minion?

When I try using the Minion Type 1 fonts in my Quark documents, the expert characters disappear.

OK, I&#39;ve sussed out how to get the fill characters working but the problem is this:

Let&#39;s say you have some words and you want to appear like this:

&#39;Blah blah blah...........................................Word&#39;
&#39;Blah blah blah ........................................Word&#39;

The space after the first words and the beginning of the dots varies on each line and I&#39;ve checked all the tabs and they are the same.

Now I&#39;m stumped.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks
