Threads not grayed out after reading ... and what do star and pencil icons mean?

I just upgraded from Tiger to Leopard and need help sorting out the forum's protocols. Used to be when I'd viewed a thread or a post, it was then grayed out. This doesn't happen any more which makes it kind of tough to sort through the stuff you've read and the stuff you haven't. Also, I can't remember what the star and pencil icons represent, and can't seem to find an explanation of them anywhere. Are them some settings/preferences I'm not seeing? Another issue is all my paragraphs smushing together in one long thread. I'm on a Mac, OS 10.5.8, with Safari, and it appears to be the culprint. Eric Y. suggested Firefox, so I tried that, but it also smushes paragraphs together. One more silly issue. I just updated my personal profile and tried to add my web site, but it told me the address was an invalid URL. My website, www.maggiedana.com is working fine (as of 30 seconds ago). What browsers are others using? Many thanks, Maggie

Well, the logic board finally gave out this morning. Had the forums up and it froze. Shutdown, tried to reboot, nothing. Worked with it for a while, got it to boot twice and each time it froze at the login screen and would not reboot. If I wait a while it may reboot but it freezes at the grayscreen and then won't reboot. So, at this point I think the logic board is toast.

Oh well. It was a good run. January 2001 to October 2009!

Anyone out there have a spare Powerbook or iBook lying around that they'd let go for $100 or less? That's about all I can afford at the moment. Looks like I'll be tied to my PC desktop at home if I can't find anything. Oh well again. At this point anything I end up with is likely to be better than the old PB.

Tiger – Filename Extension Warning

Ok. Something that is now starting to irritate me about Tiger is the dang warning whenever you want to change a filename extansion. I know that in Leopard you can turn it off and I don't seem to recall that message in Panther. But there does not appear to be an option to turn it off in Tiger.

Anyone know of a hack (or workaround) to do this? Tinker Tool and Onyx don't seem to cover that.

Forum Stats

At the bottom of the main forums page there are always the statistics. Why are they for the most part wrong?

For instance... In the past 3 days, the most popular thread for everyone has been "QuarkXPress 7.x – The "Killer" app!". The post with the most views is "Windows 7 support". The most replies were made to "7.5 crash after printing to ps in Snow Leopard". I know for a fact that "'The Killer' app" has not been active for the last three days! I made a new post to it and all of a sudden this is what gets reported.

Just curious as to why...

I've looked at VersionTracker but either I can't figure it out, or it's not geared to give me what I want, which is: Where can I find out what version of, say, Quark, fits best with a certain OS. For instance, is Quark 6.52 better suited to OS 10.4.xx, or was it written for 10.3? Likewise, on which Mac OS does CS3 run the best? Does such a list exist?

As promised in an earlier post, I'll be passing on some of my favourite recipes to those kind enough to help me with Quark 8 tips...

This one's for Emma and Redbarn... hope you'll give it a try.

Roast Quail a la Ferguson

Simply the best quail recipe I've ever done and too simple to believe... but it's true. I've cooked this for a collection of chefs who, frankly, didn't believe me when I told them how baisc this recipe is. It's taken from Angus Ferguson's brilliant book, 'Nose To Tail Eating'.

3 or 4 quail per person (partly boned out - rib cage removed - can be bought like this, or ask your supplier to do it.)

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Good Sea Salt (like Maldon Salt)

Freshly ground black pepper (lots)

Heat an oven and baking dish to 210 C (fan forced) or 220 C

Generously rub the olive oil all over the cute little quail.

Now liberally sprinkle the salt and pepper over the little darlings - don't be stingy

Tuck their little legs and wings underneath them and place them in the hot pan.

Roast them for 18 to 20 minutes, in the top of the oven. or until nicely brown and yummy looking.

Arrange a good leafy salad, with a vinegarette dressing, on warmed plates.

Place 3 or 4 quail on each plate. Serve immediately. Finger bowls recommended.

NB: The secret to this simple dish is finding a supplier of good quail and using the best oil, salt and pepper you can find.

Sounds too easy to be true but, trust me, this is a magnificent dish. (Don't try this with other small game birds... it doesn't work.)

Hi, I'm Bill (raafbloke) from Tasmania. Below is my bio. Just want to say "G'day".

I'm coming back to Quark after years away... the last version I used was V4 !

I've got V8 and the changes are a bit spooky... I'll be needing some help. If you kind people can tolerate an old newbie. Anyway, a bit about myself below.

I'm ex-alot: ex-radio producer, journalist, chef, author, book deisgner/editor. I've even sold PlayTex bras, at one stage, (and they paid me!). In my retirement (?) I'm a film producer, radio broadcaster and a constant worry to my long-suffering wife, bless her. I used early Quark and PageMaker versions way back when I was in journalism and design. Now I'm back with the brand new Quark 8 and I've got almost no idea what I'm doing. HELP! What say I swap you Quark experts great recipies for Quark tips... Deal? Cheers, Bill

Anyone using Opera 10?

I tried the beta a while back and kind of liked it. Now I'm using it again. Firefox 3 was choking (it's dang slow now). So I was on Seamonkey (again) for a while, but I got tired of it. So, tried out Opera again because it's not Mozilla based.

I've managed to add Flashblock and since Opera has it's own content settings I can specify other things to block – no need for Ad Block Plus. And Opera had Speed Dial.

It's also fast. Much faster than FF, Seamonkey and Safari. I hate how Safari will tell you it's loading page items (63 of 64!), but never seems to load the last one. Just hangs there and then bam the page is there. I hate that.

Lastly I figured out how to tell Opera to mask itself as Firefox so the toolbar here in the forums is now available to me!

So. Anyone else using Opera 10?

Matthias, anyone who's in the know. Are you guys aware that your knowledge base is down? Sales Force appears to have locked you guys out. Just try and access an item in the knowledge base and you'll get the error. What's going on?

Used to be there was free tech support on the phone. I thought it was good. The people there helped me with a couple of problems over the years. I looked for that number recently and couldn't find it, just one that cost money (per issue). Do I fail at site search? Or is the free phone tech support finished?

Where is the In.Vision Research "Group" or "Main Thread?"

http://www.invisionresearch.com/ is now redirecting to http://dynamicpublishing.quark.com/xml_author/ but there is no longer any information about IPS or RapidApp or anything "Invision" at all outside XML Author.

I wonder if none of the other IPS/RapidApp Users out there would like or need an open Forum like this or are our topics so specifically technical as to make an open Forum mute? I would think that at least a place to share XSL and/or XML or maybe even CMS functions or Java/JavaScript ideas/resources would be helpful???

Quark and Adobe are as bad as each other!

I'm fed up the the arrogant, unhelpful attitude both quark and adobe have towards their customers. Do they not understand that businesses want to upgrade their software but often cannot afford to do it all in one go and need to stagger the upgrade process. We'd love to upgrade to Snow Leopard but to do this and still receive support from these companies we'd have to upgrade to Quark 8 and Adobe CS4 at the same time. You're actually shooting yourselves in the foot by acting this way. If you continued to support us we would be more inclined to upgrade our copies of Quark maybe in 6 months time, now that is out of the question. we'll skip this version of Quark completely and possibly faze it out altogether. It wouldn't take that much effort to continue to support us, we may never actually need your support but the fact that it isn't an option on a 2 year old purchase of many thousands of pounds is a disgrace

Spent 3 hours on online support as a simple upgrade from 7 to 8 does not work on OSX... strange that all other makes of software work.... Quark advisors tried to eventually make me dump my fonts... why should I?! Surely Quark being one of the best DTP packages should get their software correct. I believe there is too much security pumped into quark, with activation, online activation, validation codes etc, that its fallen behind in popularity... I am up and running as expert level with indesign, so will banish Quark as I will advise my fellow designers! Bye bye Quark, its been niceish knowing you... but I have found someone better!

Apple is it really Green?

If Apple really wanted to go green don't you think they could release a Logic Board to swap out our beautiful G-5 PPC cases. I have invested around $5000.00 in this 3 YR old PPC G-5 2.3 GHz Duel Core 16 gigs of ram and a beautiful case. Instead if I want to move on with the new up-grade, Intel Mac I would have to spend, $5000.00 or much more with that DDR3 ram, wait would one not have to purchase upgraded software? I hope Quark and many others continue to support the PPC G-5...

Quark's Publicity Emails

This seems rather unfortunate, and I would hate to think that this is repeated on all PCs, but whenever I receive a sales promotion email from Quark, it contains rogue characters which are obviously not ASCII, and mess up the text.

Hopefully the sample below will illustrate the problem, but from a top-notch software company it should not be happening:
