Quark on 10.6.x - 64 bit

hi guys,

a quick message to say thanks for all the hard work put into v8 (i love it) and getting things up to date for us mortal quark users, things are always getting better, but I was wondering when or if quark 8 would become a true 64bit app, harnessing all that OpenCL and grand central dispatch cpu and gpu power ?

just think of all those cores processing away, all 16GB of ram kicking in and the installer decreasing to only a few hundred megs in size? no waiting around for large jobs to spool (but guess we'd all need 64bit printer drivers as well?) oh and no more low res image previews and slow screen redraws?

am i dreaming of quark nirvana or will it be a reality in the near future?

Frames and Borders

I hate to carp - but in InDesign - they provide a much greater variety of built in frames and borders - has Quark looked into doing this - or is there an extension/plug in that can be added? I searched but couldn't find anything - so if anyone has any thoughts on this - I would love to hear them!

Linux or VM version of QLA is needed

I checked in to see if Quark is providing a Linux version of QLA. So far, I did not find it. If it exists, please post a link.

Here is our problem...

To use QLA, we have to tie up an operating system license to use as a server. Given how QLA will become a run-away process and hog the CPU, it is important that we keep it on a completely seperate box where it will not harm any other server apps. This means we have to spend money on a seperate operating system license of Windows or Mac (not to mention if someone does not use virtual environments and have to dedicate a piece of hardware for it).

If Quark offered a Linux version of QLA, at least we would not have the extra added fee of an operating system in order to support our Quark users with QLA. We could simply download a free version of Ubuntu or Fedora and install the QLA app without costing us anything extra for an operating system. Or an even better idea would be for Quark to offer a virtual machine that we could download and run in a virtual environment. This would cut out the extra cost of an operating system license AND the extra hardware.

Scale tool in Quark 8

Is the scale tool going to be built in to quark 8 anytime soon or are the xpert tools pro xtensions going to be updated to work in 8? We use the Xpert scale all of the time. If you put any of the xpert toos in the extension folder of 8 the program crashes and will not load until you take them back out.

Vertical alignment in text boxes

I think it would be beneficial to be able to have center and justified alignment in all text box shapes, not just square. Also, it would be great if text could still be vertically aligned when it's running around another box.

Font feature I'd like to see.

Wouldn't it be great to have a "Hide" font feature in QuarkXpress? That way you could control the list of fonts that you're using in a layout. Before everyone starts to shout Suitcase!, try turning off your system fonts. I never use these in layouts..ever. If they could still be there, but hidden in Quark, man, that would be so nice! Is there an extension that already does this? Maybe the ability to hide or unhide fonts in a palette would be cool. Even putting the Font Replace from Utilities in the tool palette would be cool.

Please can the DPI be shown in the non-scroll area as before? It is very frustrating to have to scroll to check each image. Can this information be higher up so it can be easily seen or make the box bigger.

Hi Sirs, since 100 years the GUI of the listsbuilder is like Mr. Bill Gates talking "640kb is enought for ..."

I know, in this plastic-times oldfashioned is something like great, but I want to work, I not to play!

And other thing - I pay you guys (yes I do!) every year for an app is growing big in (web-) features nearly nobody wants to have instead of the marketing guys, this reminds me to the boaring AdobeCS featurecarambolage !!!

One big keyfearture of Xpress is the usuability, but it needs decades for making some basic GUIs work fine, so like in Xpress 8 has started. Nearly 15 yearsafter Xpress 3, so pls dont stop at the deeper little menue-guis.

H&J default settings in Quark 8

I would greatly prefer it if I were given the option to delete the new default H&Js (Narrow Measure, No Hyphenation, Titles, Very Narrow Measure, Wide Measure). I use my own saved H&J settings, and I don't like having any superfluous settings in my files because it only increases the chance of an error occurring.

Automatic spell check like WORD

Could you PLEASE add in Quark an automatic spellcheck? Quark's spell check is such annoying process that really is time consuming and involved. It would greatly improve accuracy for those designers like me who can't SPELL...

Even this NEW TOPIC has automatic spell check, giving me suggestions as I go along.

Its bad enough you have to pay 39 dollars anytime you call for support on something that would only take a few minutes.

But I tried using the chat support and have been sitting here looking at an empty window ("supposedly a support technician is supposed to be with me "shortly") for 3 hours now.

Seeing how I am in the Printing industry and have spent quite a bit of money on quark already, if support is going to continue being this bad, I have no problem uninstalling quark from all 4 of our digital computers and all 5 of our prepress mac's and will transfer to ADOBE.

Third Party Spell Checker?

Word Counts

In 8.0 to get a word count for editors who pay their writers by the word, I would do a spell check on a text "selection" (not story or the layout) to get the word count.

In 8.1, there are no word counts in the spell checks. So, I go to the new pull down "utilities / word and character counts" -- but this seems to only give you a count for the entire story, not just a text selection for the story. I was told there is no way to get a word count on a selection of text.

I am quite sure I am not the only designer that needs this feature. In the mean time, I have to delete the writer bio, subheads, and etc; and do a word count on the story (which has no keyboard equivalent so I have to go to the pulldown menu for each story). It will take me 3-times longer to go through the magazine as it did before. Multiply that out and it is a problem.

As a Chinese, has been very concerned about Quark, but it has been difficult to contact directly and express their views.

I want to say my own feelings, in the absence indesign era, Quarkxpress is the best. But Quark right indesign until non-existent. Until now, still seems to be so.

By chance I tested the system in memory tense environment indesign faster than quarkxpress startup, the page opening time is even shorter.When you create a blank layout, the want to draw a text box, Quarkxpress even need to wait a long time, but indesign can be drawn at that time.why? Are we not as good as indesign Mody software program?

indesign could directly inport the AI file, Why quark with or acquisition, coreldraw and allied corel company?

Indesign can be read the document quarkxpress, why quarkxpress can't read the document indesign?

I think this is the problem of product strategy!

In china, many designer and printers are working abroad for. In addition, i ran tests to previous versions of some problems, 8.12 version is still have any improvements.Some function and indesign than there are still not good enough. Surpass others, and not merely seeking differentiation, the need for real. real advantage are based on the basis of the alternatives.

In their own pride, there are enough self-confidence is not wrong. But in the face reality and admit the reality to be able to succeed, rather than blindly arrogant. This requires thinking and wisdom.

Spell Check

I would like to see an expanded preferences for spell check. I use a lot of bullet points in my 1500 page catalog and when I run spell check it stops at every one. It is more trouble that it is worth. I did not do that before I upgrade to 7. If I could filter out certain characters that would be a lot of help.

Drag and Drop

In the old versions you could just drag and drop pictures. The new version 8... it creates a whole new box. Bring back the old drag and drop ability.

Tool Bar

In the old version it was expanded you did not have to scroll to find your tool. In version 8 it is too compact slowing down efficiency. Allow expanded tool bar.

Renaming Output Style XML Files for simpler sharing

When creating a new Output Style Quark automatically names the xml file a cryptic "Style 25.OutputStyle.xml".

When I attempt to rename the xml with a meaningful name, I can't just copy the xml into the preferences folder. I must import the settings.

But when importing the "named.xml" file, the xml that appears in the Preferences/Output Styles folder is back to the generic name.

I'm wanting to name these so that I can share them with coworkers needing the same output styles, but which of the 25 settings (though only about 10 appear in my menu) do I use?

Oh, and I know that Job Jackets is supposed to include this functionality, but for various unknown reasons this feature doesn't work (yes, I'm working with Quark to resolve.)

Find/Replace palette functionality

Show the colour space of pictures in the measurements pallet

The measurements pallet shows the resolution of imported pictures but not their colour space. At present there is a little grey icon to the left of the resolution number. it would be a great help if this icon could show the pictures colour space ie. show a CMYK icon or an RGB one etc. David

Things YOU'D Like to See in QuarkXpress

Hi. I've used InDesign since version 2 and I'm now learning QuarkXpress 8. I like it a lot so far and it's very powerful when it comes to collaborating and sharing multiple layouts. I also absolutely LOVE the fact that you can design web and flash content in it. However these are just a few things I'd like to see Quark add on their next revision whether it be 8.5 or 9. Please share your thoughts too. Maybe Quark will read it. Eyedropper Tool (easier to work with colors). Easier way to ADD and DELETE colors. More Gradient Options (Add multiple colors and the positions - like Illustrator or InDesign). Ability to continue a path with the bezier tool after moving on to another object (like Illustrator) (Right now you can merge two paths together but it's just easier to continue a path). MUCH FASTER Start-Up (Quark 7 and 8 take a good long time to open in comparison to other design programs). Better support for Full-Resolution Previews (Colors in EPS and PDF files seem wrong most of the time in Full-Resolution preview). A simple pre-flight tool build in. I say a simple one because I know that it has a powerful Job Jacket tool and this works much better than pre-flighting but just an extra simple one if your not using a Job Jacket. Ability to Center a webpage (Very Important) as an option. A few more Effects for use in an interactive layout. That's all that comes to mind right now. I will add more later.

Saving QX elements as IMAGES.

Being that you can design basically anything in QX8, it would be amazingly awesome if Quark allowed users to save elements they design as images (jpg, gif, etc.). Wouldn't that be awesome? It would be even cooler if I'm wrong and QX already allows this, but as far as I can tell this isn't part of the package. Thoughts anyone?
