[quote user="GreatWhite"]Annoyingly it works fine in Indesign.
Creating an eps of the pdf also works (kind of)
It appears to be a new problem (to us anyway)
Any ideas

Its not a new problem, quark and placed pdfs have been going wrong since version 4.
what do you mean by "Creating an eps of the pdf also works ...

100GB really, ...gosh, you aren't by any chance placing HD video files.

Acrobat 9 Preferences > Page Display > Enhance Thin lines, (turn it off) sometimes makes a difference. I'm surprised its not the same from InDesign though.

Placing PDFs into quark is hit and miss, it relies on JAWS to interpret the PDF and turn it into a sort of internal postscript before output. If it works, chalk it up as you got lucky. InDesign doesn't have to turn the pdf into postscript it has access to the same PDF library that Acrobat uses. Your best bet for troublesome PDFs that really ...

All I need is to edit in photoshop and update the link in illy, but I'd like the text and vector to raster at the plate resolution, with TIF I'm seeing 300ppi jpeg in the final Illy PDF.

No I don't want to convert the photoshop to illy.
I know that if I save the photoshop as EPS it will keep fonts and vector sharp but I can't subsequently open it up to edit it without rasterizing.
I'm pretty sure ...

BTW, TIF is multipurpose. You can store layer data and fonts in TIF. A TIF can have an alpha channel AND a clipping path. But if you do your work in a TIF and have type in it you'd still want to save out an EPS from that to preserve the vector data. It's for these reasons I usually use TIF over PSD. They are essentially the ...

Excellent advice from maliki.
I just wanted to add that combining separate pdfs in Acrobat can cause severe font problems at RIP with characters dropping or type scrunching.

Roast quail ala Alex Ferguson
Let it run around for 45minutes. Give it the hair dryer treatment for 15minutes. If its not any good after that then flog it to Real Madrid.

It sounds like Distiller is selecting a different Settings file than the one you are selecting. Have you tried the Adobe forums? You may be looking at trashing Prefs and repairing the installation.
