  • Re: Quark 6.1 and Snow Leopard

Run the 10.6.2 update that just came out, it fixed some serious font issues. These are known to cause font movement in XPress 7 and 8 on 10.6, so despite 6.x not being supported it seems fairly likely it is the same issue in this instance. What other issues there may be are another story...

  • Re: Strange change in quark document

Sorry, I can 't really think what might be going on here, or why it would be specific to those files. Might have had something to do with the OS change, but personally I'm still on 10.4.11, with one Leopard Mac I do limited testing on. So about the only advice I can give right now is to keep backing them up to more than one location, and ...

  • Re: Strange change in quark document

Hi Frank, Without going into a lot of technical background, the short answer is to just always manually add the .qxp extension to your filenames when saving. When you keep them on the Mac drive, they should have additional file metadata that will cause them to be recognized as Quark documents even without those extensions. But it sounds as ...

  • Re: Strange change in quark document

You're seeing the raw code that makes up a file, it looks as though they are not being recognized as XPress documents. Try adding a .qxp to the end of the file names, after confirming the addition of the extension make sure they show Quark icons in the Finder. If they don't then open properly via double-click try going into XPress and ...

  • Re: Tech Support now £20 a call

I'm not sure where you get the idea Adobe doesn't charge for technical support via phone. That's not true in the US, and their international site indicates the same for the UK, and I expect other countries as well. They already charged during the period when Quark was providing it for free. Given current economic conditions and ...

  • Re: Kerning Value Tables

The format of the file has been changed. A lot of the preference files in XPress 7 and 8 are now in XML, which is more descriptive than the old format. If you open the file in a text editor, you'll see that the pairs are now wrapped in explicit tags defining the different parts or elements that make up each kerning pair. However, I did ...

  • Re: Quark 4

I can't say I'm surprised; I doubt very much there is any comprehensive version archive that support could access, and given all the changes at Quark and the number of versions, I'm not sure how easily anyone there could lay hands on that file. I used Passport 4.1 for testing, and I'm sure I had that file at some time, ...

  • Re: 6.52 doesn't open. Preference folder damaged

Good deal, glad you're back up and running. I wouldn't call it a frequent occurrence, but deleting the preference file is useful at times, both when you can't launch, or if some settings or behavior simply seem to have gotten out of whack. The downside is you lose any changes you've made to the default preferences, and ...

  • Re: 6.52 doesn't open. Preference folder damaged

The application preferences file is the one named XPress Preferences.prf; chances are that is the only damaged one, based on the error. I would pull that, but I don't recommend you toss it straight in the trash even though it is probably damaged; whenever you pull files like this it's a good idea to put them in a folder where you ...

  • Re: QuarkXPress 8.1 + Snow Leopard = Major font issues (leading, all sorts)

Sorry, but worth a try; doing that sort of conversion can actually address a variety of issue. I have not seen the leading type issues yet in 8, but did see some oddly compressed drop caps, and option open did fix those. While XPress tries to maintain and honor older text flow, I think when you move to a new version option open is a good way to ...
