Run the 10.6.2 update that just came out, it fixed some serious font issues. These are known to cause font movement in XPress 7 and 8 on 10.6, so despite 6.x not being supported it seems fairly likely it is the same issue in this instance. What other issues there may be are another story...

You're seeing the raw code that makes up a file, it looks as though they are not being recognized as XPress documents. Try adding a .qxp to the end of the file names, after confirming the addition of the extension make sure they show Quark icons in the Finder. The format of the file has been changed. A lot of the preference files in XPress 7 and 8 are now in XML, which is more descriptive than the old format. If you open the file in a text editor, you'll see that the pairs are now wrapped in explicit tags defining the different parts or elements that make up each kerning pair.
