Can't import color swatches with Illustrator eps

    Quark 7.3.1

What would cause Quark not to bring in the color swatches from an Illustrator CS3 Logo and illustrations.

Both Pantone or CMYK... can't get the colors to come in. I know something must be set wrong and is staring me in the face.

This is so basic its driving me crazy!

    Thanks for the help.

Try saving down to CS2/CS1, or Illy 10 and see what happens.

Sometimes a quark document gets stuck.
What happens when you create a new document and Get Picture place your EPS.
If this works then create an object in quark, colour it the colour you want in your 'stuck' document and cut and paste that.

Sorry if this is really obvious but check these Swatches are actually used for objects in your EPS.

    Ok thanks guys.

Try the above to no avail so far.

    1. If I color an object in illustrator using the PMS book swatch (spot color) it is coming into Quark now.

    2. In illustrator: If I change that object from PMS to CMYK OR make it a custom CMYK color( with a name: ie Dark Purple) from the beginning... the color will not be imported into Quark.

I could just make that CMYK color in Quark using the formula... but we're talking many colors and double work over may publications.

    Thanks again.

Only Spot colours are imported into quark. Any cmyk swatches stay in Illy.

You could make them all spot in illy, import then change them in Quark's Edit colour to cmyk, then go back to illy and change them to cmyk there too. This would get the same breaks in BUT DONT USE THE NAME PANTONE for any of them.

At a later date if you change the cmyk break in illy you'll have to remember to do the same in quark.

    Thanks Glenn,

    That works.

Just for the sake of knowledge...
If I DID NOT go back into "illy" and change them from spot colors to CMYK could someone down the line have problems separating this file?

Works fine separating the colors when changed from spot to CMYK in Quark only. (On a laser printer).

You'd also want to verify that the color breaks are the same between Quark and Illy. Depending on what version of the Pantone library each is using, if you use Quark and Illustrator's automatic conversions, you may get different breaks between the two applications.

For example, our corporate logo color, PMS 348 C, breaks down as 100.4.87.18 in Q7.31, 100.0.85.24 in Illy CS2.

    The Short answer is Yes.

Typically the workflow for cmyk print is to create a high res composite pdf. Placed EPS (if not under the influence of transparency or forced colour management) Spot Colours will just get passed through to Distiller and the cmyk conversion would happen later. Sometimes this would be done by a profile to profile conversion, sometimes the alternative colour space of the spot colour would be used, sometimes both. If you really want the cmyk numbers its safest to do it as early as possible and check it in the PDF. Its certainly feasible to leave the spot colours in the eps and lots of people do, but changing them could save you an unexpected result in print.

    Thanks Glenn.

Yes it would be better to be safe than sorry.
