Quark 6.52 making duplicates in Leopard

I installed Leopard a few weeks ago and needless to say, have all kinds of issues working in both Q6.52 and Q7.31. Have called tech support and they haven't been able to help. Went to the Apple web site and nothing there either. What's been going on is when I double-click on a file in either Q6.52 and Q7.31 it makes a copy. Have been trying for a couple weeks to find a solution, so there you go. Has anyone experienced the same issue? When I open while in the application, sometimes it does not make a copy. It's annoying to have to keep deleting the copies. And when I save while I've got a doc open the icon turns into a shortcut (has the little shortcut arrow as part of the icon).

One other thing, I use the Badia Printools XT to batch up a bunch of ps files with a Distiller watched folder destination ultimately making PDFs in the background. Distiller sees that there's a bunch of ps files in the "in" folder and does it's thing. But as soon as I installed Leopard, that whole workflow went out the window. My first PDF looks OK, but the rest have the page orientation coming out wrong. Installed the latest version of the Xtension and still having problems. Every road I go down to troubleshoot ends up with no solution. I am aware that Quark 6.5 was not tested/approved for Leopard, and the folks at Quark recommended that I upgrade to 6.52, which I did. No help. Am having the same copy issues and using the Xtension in Quark 7.31. Doesn't matter what settings I try to change in Leopard's system preferences either. I went to Apple's Forums and did a search in the area where other people have had issues with Leopard, and I can't seem to find a similar issue. I really depend on Quark to work properly and there have been days when I've been dead in the water trying to figure out a solution. Anybody got any ideas?

Have you checked your preferences to see if auto-save and auto-backup are on?

Yes. I didn't overlook that setting during all my troubleshooting. Auto Save and Auto Backup are both unchecked.

Just curious as to where the files are saved. I think a file is saved for spotlight as a shortcut, perhaps this is what you are seeing.

Another thing to try is drag your QXP perfs to the desktop then relaunch QXP and see if the problem goes away, if not replace them so you won't lose what you have setup.

I have the same problem here. I don't have an answer too, but I hope that someone can help us :(

    Because this isn't working...

I have the same issues. We just purchased a new iMAC with Leopard and running 6.5.2. I see a lot of the same problems in the forum but no solutions.

I assume that you are working off of a server. I am having the same issue when working off our server. If I click to open a file it will create a duplicate with the name "copy1" attached. I can save once only, subsequent saves must be made using "save as". What is actually happening is that the first save is activating the "Stationary Pad" option, that can be seen by "getting info" on the file. If I uncheck that box the file will open normally, but the option will be re-activated after the first save. The only workarounds that I can see is to open files by dragging on to the application, or to use the "Open" command from within quark. This eliminates the duplication, but after the initial save you still have to use the "Save as" command.

For me this is a real pain. I am in the middle of making a server upgrade decission and Quark 6.5.2 is running more like a piece of demo software. I have Quark 7.3.1, but several extensions that we rely on are not compatible. We started testing this new server last week, and of the dozens of applications that I use, only Quark is causing problems.

You guys are really pushing me!

Quark 6.52 making duplicates in Leopard

We just started having this same problem. We bought a Mac Pro a few weeks ago and put it into production this week, or should I say we are trying to put it into production.

Our problem is a little bit different though in the fact that we are seeing the copy files being made not only while working on our Leopard machine but also now on other Macs, ones that are running 10.4.11. It's not consistent in either OS, it comes and goes. As stated above, we are also opening files off of a server.

Quark 6.52 making duplicates in Leopard

We have this issue as well. Working off a server or working off the Mac (Leopard) desktop does not seem to change the fact that some files make copies on double-click open and other files don't. I also have found the these files that make a copy on double-click open will make a copy when being opened by an AppleScript. However, the file will open without a copy if it is dragged over the Quark 6 application icon or is opened from an Open command from within Quark.

It seems to be a file issue (maybe some type of corruption). When an effected file is saved over (Save As... with the same name and replace), the behavior of making a copy on open disappears.

I suspect some strange type of "corruption" which may take place when saving a file using Tiger and then trying to open on Leopard...? Another think I discover with these "corrupt" files is that they also open a copy of themselves in a text editor application too (meaning the file opens as untitled or some generic name, while a non-corrupt file will open with its own name).

Just some observations. Unfortunately, no solutions.

I suspect you may well be right and it'll probably stem from the fact that 6.52 and Leopard do not, and will not, play well together. Only 7.31 is certified for OS 10.5. Clearly it's an issue whether the machine running 6.5 uses Leopard or the server does. Obviously the solution is to avoid any situation with 6.52 coming in to contact with 10.5!

Good luck folks ... we've downgraded all 10.5 machines to 10.4, not because of Quark - we don't use it - but because of other software issues.

Quark 6.52 making duplicates in Leopard

I think I have a solution, well at least I have a way to make the duplication stop. I have not tracked it to it's source, yet.

I did a Get Info.. in the Finder (Tiger and Leopard) and the box for "Stationery Pad" is checked on the files which copy themselves on double-click or open.

I plan on writing a small Applescript to check/fix this setting before working the Quark files in production.

When I save a second time I get:

    "Unexpected end-of-file encountered.
    [-39]"

    Sad

I've had the same problem as you guys. I found a little bit of a workaround by opening the file directly in QuarkXpress instead of double clicking on the file to open it. So far it seems to work.

Check out this website http://www.macwindows.com/quark.html it has some good info on how Quark works with AFP servers.

Wow! Good info but out of date! June 11, 2001.
    Not really related to Leopard!

We are having the same duplication of files problem, with Quark 6.52 files opening in Leopard.

A number of folks in the local MUG (Mac Users Group) have said that they have run into weird problems with Leopard when it was installed using the upgrade option. But when they went back and did a clean install (wipe and install) that cleared up the problem.

Has anyone seen if this clears up the Quark problem yet?
