Could anyone help me to understand how to set up the following specs on a double facing page layout? The doc has a cover, then a double facing page, then a back cover.

Page Trim Size: 8 3/8" x 10-7/8"
Bleed Size 8 1/2 x 11 1/8
Live size: 7 7/8 x 10 3/8


many thanks as I'm pulling out my hair over this and I think it's much simpler than i realize.

Bleed Size 8 1/2 x 11 1/8 (make your text box 8.5 x 22.25)
Page Trim Size: 8 3/8" x 10-7/8"(make the next box 8.375 x 21.75)
Live size: 7 7/8 x 10 3/8 (7.875 x 20.75)

Use Space and Align to center the 3 smaller ones and your done. There may be a much better way of doing this, but I don't know what it is. I'm on a PC with 7.31. I hope this helps.

When you create a new document, set your trim size in the "Page" section of the new doc dialog box. Set inch sizes as decimal numbers followed by the double quote mark (i.e., 8.5"), or follow the general Quark guidelines for using the measurement system of your choice. Page size = trim size.

In the same dialog box, but over to the right, set your margins to give you a text box equal to your live size requirements. Page size minus margin values = live size.

Set your bleed spec in the Bleed tab of the Print dialog box as so many picas or points or what have you. If you want a quarter inch bleed, enter .25". If you are using master pages, you can set ruler guides on them to help position page elements so they bleed correctly (to whatever your spec is), but producing the bleed on the output is I think a function of the print settings.

These settings can all be reset on an existing document: page size in the Layout/Layout properties... dialog, margins by selecting the master page(s) then choosing the Page/Master guides... dialog, and bleed in the print dialog.

It's time you guys went metric. Millimetres are much easier! :D

The concept of "live size" may be unnecessary here, though. That's more a design thing, and you can indicate the live size by dragging out some guides from the rulers. Then you can draw whatever text and picture boxes you wish in the live area of your document.

If you have "Automatic text box" checked in the new document dialog, you'll get a text box that fills the margins you set in that dialog box. But your live area may include running heads or something that need to be in their own boxes. So you might need to make your page margins smaller than your live page spec to automatically produce the main text boxes where you want them. Then, on a master page perhaps, you'd add boxes for running heads etc--inside the live area, but outside your main text box.

Yes indeed, 215.9 mm X 279.4 mm is way more simple than 8.5" X 11"...

What can be simpler than using picas?
It was DESIGNED for print.
72 even numbers for 1 inch.

InDesign lets you set all this in the new dialog, Trim, bleed, slug etc.

I agree with the guy about InDesign. I dread every time I receive a file from someone in Quark. For years I was one of Quark's biggest advocates. But I've moved on, and am thankful that I did. I pull my hair out, every time I have to revert back to Quark, and try to think inside that old box. It's almost as bad as Metric.

 Yes, ID does let you to set those values, but why have I to set three values in ID, when QXP needs only one - bleed? The others are set automatically.

Besides, all these things are not related to Quark. Its about finishing technology (if you don't know it, try something else, not DTP for print, or ask a printing office to learn you).

About inches: they are as good as mm or picas, as long as you are accustomed to them. But in two thirds of our beautiful world, the metric system is the main rule. It's about how paper makers are manufacturing paper sheets or the paper webs (what about ISO standards?)

I'm very sorry. I missed your question about the problem you are currently having with QuarkXPress in that last post of yours.

Or did you really mean to resurrect a two year old thread so you can make personal comments about InDesign? 

In Q8, things are as always in Quark: you set up margins at the New document setup level. Then you can easily set up bleed and safety from Guides palette: if you click the little icon at the top right of the palette a drop down menu (or whatever you call it) shows a list of items among whch Create Bleed Safety Guides.HTH.
