    Interactive Menu Suggestions

The interactive menu features in QID1.0 are a bit limited. Please see the examples below. Are there any plans to improve this?

      1. You can only create a horizontal menu, not a vertical one
      2. You cannot specifiy the width of the menu or menu items
      3. The placeholder only serves to indicate the position of where the menu will originate. Any textbox fomatting etc is ignored.
      4. The 'text inset' value entered in the Interactive Menu Properties does not seem to work - at least for me (OS X 10.4.9, QXP 7.2)
      5. There is no way to create a menu system which allows you to assign a display a page and assign a sound to it - a common use for Flash style 'clicky' menus.

    Interactive Menu Suggestions

    Hi, pstephenson5,

thank you for your feedback. Some thoughts:

    pstephenson5:

      1. You can only create a horizontal menu, not a vertical one

Interactive allows you to create menu bars (horizontal) and popup menus (vertical). Is the latter what you mean? If not, can you point me to an example?

      2. You cannot specifiy the width of the menu or menu items

Correct, the width of the menu item is being calculated automatically, so as wide as the longest item. By adding spaces you can make it larger. If that's not what you need, what do you want to achieve?

      3. The placeholder only serves to indicate the position of where the menu will originate. Any textbox fomatting etc is ignored.

That's true. However, what are you hoping to achieve by doing this, as maybe there's another way of doing this?

      4. The 'text inset' value entered in the Interactive Menu Properties does not seem to work - at least for me (OS X 10.4.9, QXP 7.2)

Works fine here for me. Have you given the menu item a background, so that you see the effect?

      5. There is no way to create a menu system which allows you to assign a display a page and assign a sound to it - a common use for Flash style 'clicky' menus.

I am not completely sure what you mean. Do you want to play a sound when mouse-overing over the menu item or do you want to play a sound when selecting the menu?

    Thanks

Spaces are a pretty limited way to set the overall width of a menu, especially if you want it to span the screen width exactly. I suggest a width option added to the Interactive Menu properties so you can specify the width of the entire menu in pixels or percentage of the layout width. The menu items would then space equally to match the width. The same could be done for height.

What I meant about the placeholder was that is you wanted a menu to appear in the top left corner of the project or anywhere other than the top right there is currently no way to accurately position it without repeatedly previewing the SWF and altering the menu position.

The menu has a solid colour background. Changing the text input values has no effect for me.

The former - mouseover sounds when you browse the menu .

    Many thanks

    pstephenson5:

I was thinking of a vertical parent menu with child menus which pop out horizontal. In the world of web dev most DHTML menu scripts do both horizontal and vertical menus. For example:

You are right, these kind of menus Interactive cannot create by using a menu. You would have to assemble them using individual objects. Great suggestion for future versions.

What would you do then with elements that are too long, just truncate them?

    Good point.

Can you also send this project to Kabir (QA) please?

Also good suggestion. Thank you for that.

I don't know technically what is feasible but I think if the element is too long it should override the width setting rather than truncate.

    I've done this.
