Quark 8 - still low-quality for EPS files?

Having downloaded the Q8 trial, we are currently evaluating the package.

We were disappointed to find that EPS files (i.e. logos etc.), when imported, look identically low-resolution to previous Quark versions.

Could anyone confirm whether this is something Quark has resigned itself to, or are we missing the 'display EPS files quite well' tick box?
(low and full-resolution preview option make little difference).

Needless to say, InDesign is capable of rendering EPS files in perfect quality.

If you CTRL click on the image and choose Full Resolution for Preview Resolution, that will make the EPS files display much clearer.

Thanks for the suggestion, but as mentioned above - this does not have any affect on a vector EPS file (such as a logo).

    (great for pictures, though)

Don't worry about it - QXP has always been crap for previewing EPSs. As long as photos and line art don't pixel I'm fine with that.

This is set by default to preview placed artwork in low-resolution mode. InDesign is also set this way, and looks pretty much identical layout-for-layout with Quark (and just had an editor ask why an Illustrator EPS was displaying ragged in ID). I do a lot of magazine design--if all of my placed EPS and TIFF artwork in spreads were rendering in high-resolution for screen display, response would be quite sluggish, even on a fast computer with plenty of memory. As in InDesign, you can set preview resolution. This has been available in Quark since version 6. Hope this helps!

I'm not necessarily worried about it, just seeking confirmation that the all-new, shiny, spangly Quark Xpress has yet to consider graphic design with its DTP package; given the necessity to include EPS logos and pictures when organising design layouts. We're currently using 6.5 - and we had hoped that by version 8, logos could be viewed properly, and when deleting items like, say, a black 1pt line - that they would actually delete without having to zoom in and out of the screen. Incredible really. Quite how drop shadows and gaussian blurs have taken precedence over fundamental issues is a complete mystery.

    Say what?

Your saying you can import an EPS file (like a logo) into Quark and it will actually render correctly?

    Please post a step-by-step ..

Mmmmm I agree and been using Quark since 3.32 but slowly slowly catchy monkey I guess. I love the new QXP - a few things still need looking at so I have no idea what sort of designers Quark researched!!! My only one gripe about 8 is the toolbox - I can't stand that massive green cross so with the help of http://www.shinyfrog.net/en/software/img2icns/ I changed it using the photoshop arrow as a template. Looks soooo much better now. I also changed the text links to the older ones but with 3D and colour. Funny how the simplest of things could be better?!

It's in the preferences under 'EPS' - change the virtual memory to 1024

    That doesn't make any difference.

Fundamentally, Quark simply cannot render vector EPS files ... which is simply astonishing.

It's like editing a movie with the background always on low-res. until you finally screen it at a local multi-plex - wouldn't it be better to be able to edit it properly in the first place. I can't think of another piece of software which is so utterly flawed. It's not like Quark hasn't been going for 800 years.

Adobe, inventor of EPS, says, don't use it anymore. Duh.

Indesign having lots of issues with EPS. Adobe tech: use PDF instead.

Stop using it. Use AI, PDF, PSD, TIFF, JPG.

AI, EPS and PDF all look equally as horrific when imported into Quark (any version). PSD, TIFF and JPEG are not vector formats. So Quark is problematic to us. We have no bias to Adobe or Quark - we only care about what works. You dig?

Re: Quark 8 - still low-quality for EPS files?

James: Vector art EPS files can be rendered at full resolution in QuarkXpress 8 (and in v7 for that matter). I tried it out last Friday night after I loaded my new version of 8. Here is a Step-By-Step of how to do it in QuarkXpress 7 — I'm pretty certain that the steps would be the same for v8: 1) With your file open, and the picture box with your .eps file selected, go "View>Full Res Previews" so that "Full Res Previews" is checked. 2) Control-Click on the picture box with your .eps file, and go to "Preview Resolution>Full Resolution" . . . That's it. Full resolution .eps files in QuarkXpress. (I think that there is also some sort of mini-tutorial showing this for version 8 on the Quark web site, but I can't remember exactly where.) Assuming that you have correctly setup all your colour settings, did you check the two options about EPS/PDF vector files at the bottom of the Colour Manager panel in QXP preferences? It works fine for me, when I ask the full resolution preview of PDF files imported into Quark Xpress. If you have those unchecked, after you've checked them you have to disable and then re-enable the full-res preview of the imported file/s. With the two options unchecked, full-res preview of PDFs (and EPS I think, though I don't use EPS anymore) appear like they were in RGB colours with extra-hi saturation and so on. Hope this helps.
