    Opening a previously-made book crashes Quark 4.1

    Quark version: 4.1
OS: Win 2000 with all available updates

My project is to lay out a book.  The "Book"
feature in Quark 4.1 looked like just the thing.

I'm currently moving up the learning curve and
have created chapters as standard Quark documents by importing text from Word.
The separate Quark documents open and save fine.

Then I created a book with a master chapter, added
a few more chapters as a test, and saved the book.  The
resulting book appears in the correct folder.  In fact,
everything went smooth up to that point.

However, if I try to open the book either by starting
Quark and doing a File --> Open, OR by double-clicking
directly on the Quark book file, Quark starts then immediately
    an error window appears:

"Program Error (in the top bar)  QuarkXPress.exe has generated
errors and will be closed by Windows.  You will need to restart
the program.  An error log is being created."

Looks like Quark did something that bummed out the OS.

Quark opens the separate documents no sweat, but will not
open a book made with them.

I realize this is an old version.  It is an original distribution
given to me, not a bootleg, and looks like it will do what I
need if I can get around this problem.  Anybody have any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Max

I have never seen that problem, do you have enough free disk space.

Maybe you can do a "save as" of the original chapters and add them to a new book.

I definitely have plenty of free disk space.  Also, I'd already tried your

suggestion of making a new book.  Same result.  Just for grins I tried installing

Quark on XP (which it is not listed as being compatible) and an older Win98SE

machine (which Quark 4.1 *should* run on).  Both instances also crash

instantly!  They won't even allow creation of a simple document -- the

    application never runs.

One thing I may be doing a little differently: I enter my name and Validation

Code during installation, then repeatedly hit "enter" to get through the

rest of the registration process to avoid adding any more info.  The S/W

is obviously not supported any more.  I'll try going back and re-installing

on 2000 (which is the only OS that seems to work even halfway) with

"real" info and see what happens.

I'm wondering if I might have a bad distribution.  It's very possible this

particular copy had never been installed anywhere until I tried it.

I'll try making some more books with just one chapter, etc., and

other variations to see if I can narrow down whether it's one of my

sample chapters causing the problem, or an inability to open the

book format itself.  Seems to be no problem with the individual

    chapters.

*******Does anyone recall if Quark came out with any specific

bug fixes for 4.1?  That may be my problem.

Goal here is to do the best I can with what I have now -- Version 4.1.  Buying a later Quark version

is not an option.  If I can't get the "book" feature to work correctly, I'll just try

putting the book together en masse without it.

Would still really like to know if anyone else has used the "book" feature with Quark 4.1

    running under Win2000.

    Thanks,

Max. 4.11 was free. It's an update, not an upgrade. Updates are free. Upgrades are not.

Version 4 had 4.0, 4.04, 4.1 and 4.11. All free. Now, if you were going to go to XPress 5.0, that you would have to pay for since that's an upgrade, not an update.

The only thing I can suggest as I don't work with the book feature is to make sure your account is an admin account. Both XPress 4 and 5 require an admin account to work properly.
