text box won't stay behind in Quark 8

I have a 30 page "yellow pages"-type document. It has a main text box with a lot of 2- and 3-line listings.  However, about 25 of the listings per page get a small boxed ad. I drag that box from a library and place it in the right place on top of the text box to later import an image or create the ad. (I haven't been making them inline boxes because I'm having trouble doing that -- but that's another post).

The problem is that after 2-3 pages of doing this, the text in the original box pops to the front. I then have to send it to the back. After it happens once, it starts to happen more frequently. I then have to quit and restart to get it to work for a few more pages, then repeat.

I hope I've explained this well enough to make sense. Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong?

This has to be a bug but you should be able to get around that by placing your ads on a different layer (that sits ABOVE the main text)

w/r to anchoring boxes, do you have problem only in Q8 or in general?

To be honest, I don't have time to try to learn layers for this project. Also I've heard some printers have a problem with files with layers -- don't know the details, just what I read online somewhere.

As for inline boxes -- I tried placing the box then Cmd-Xing it, then Cmd-Shft-Opt Ving it. It worked for the first one, but not for subsequent ones. I didn't have time to play around because of deadline, so I didn't try to figure it out.

I wonder if anyone else is experiencing the text box problem, though. Is there a bug report page?

    Re: Inline boxes.

Draw your box. Set the runaround to 0pt on all sides (NB a runaround of 'none' is NOT the same thing!). With the mover tool (top tool), select it and command-X it.

Now choose the next tool down (content tool), click into the text box where you want your inline box to be, and paste (plain paste, command-V).

Remember your text box must be at least as wide as your inline box, or it will overflow! (You can actually place a wider box in a narrower box if you set negative runarounds, but don't worry about that till you've got the basics working!)

And, to simply bring a box to front, function 5. To send a box to back, shift function 5.

Maybe the problem is related to the library object. Try to put the object in front before placing it in the library. Then drag it to your page.

Emma -- thanks, I'll try 0 all around (the box I'm pasting actually has top and bottom of 5, left and right of 0) and then plain pasting at the insertion point.

mac-nick -- after the first time this happened, I had the same thought as you, so I did bring the box to the front before putting it in the library, but the same thing happened after a few places.

Geo -- yes, I use F5 a lot, but the issue is more why all of a sudden the big text box jumps to the front after pasting a few boxes on it. :-/
