    Customers and their logos....

Emma goes off on another customer rant....

A client of mine is producing an order form to sell his products through another organisation's gift shop. The order form will carry the organisation's logo.

I've built artwork, using a low res logo off the internet for now, expecting to get a decent logo to place later.

The organisation are not prepared to give me one! They say I must supply the file and they will place it, then return it so my customer can print....

I've explained to him: in the unlikely event that they have Quark, they would still need to supply the original logo file to print; if they somehow cobble it into a PDF, I could if I wished extract it and use if for my own nefarious purposes.

So how on earth are we to do this with any security? It just seems daft. Gimme the damn logo. What am I going to - they are not a top secret organisation but run stately homes and stuff in the UK for visitors to look at and buy ersatz home-made jams and stuff.

Emma. Do they actually have a logo? If they do and they seem to be a large business, there are some options. I've had a history of ad reps being unable to supply me with anything, so I've learned to go out and get what I need – if it's there.

If they are a business of any size then they have a web presence. You can try looking at their site for any PDFs you can find. Financial reports are a big one. They usually have their logos buried in the reports. You can use Illy to go in and delete everything but the logo and then save out an EPS of the logo. Sometimes they might have informational flyers. Stuff, like see what we are doing for the community, etc. They'll have their logo on that. Again, you can go in there with Illy and get it.

If you can't find anything then chances are they don't have a logo, or access to it. Which should tell you something.

Clients are good for income. They just don't know anything!

     Emma,

A year or more ago someone asked for recommendations for stock photography, and 'thing' (Greg) posted a list, including the following:

    http://logotypes.designer.am/

If the organisation whose logo you are looking for is big, there is a chance you will find it here. Usually Illustrator vector EPS from the one's I've used so far.

    Otherwise, Eric's PDF suggestion!

    Re: Customers and their logos....

Thanks all - I followed Eric's suggestion, got a nice one from a pdf!

The thing is, they want to use their own good quality logo, but don't want ME to have possession of it. I can't see how that can easily be accomplished. I don't know if they'll notice that I've put in a high res version and arrest me....

BTW, their initials begin with NT and there is an oak leaf involved, so they are well-established!

Emma. I don't know about UK laws, but here in the US you would be engaged in a lawful endeavor on their behalf to promote their business. You would not be benefitting from the use of their logo for your own devices and therefore profit from it. All the way around you'd be legal. A shame they wouldn't give it to you direct.

In any case, I'm glad my idea worked for you. This is something I regularly do because my ad reps are usually unable to get a hi-res anything from the customer.

P.S. Sometimes the people creating the PDFs realize that people such as ourselves can get in to the PDFs and extract their content. So they lock the PDFs. You can get around that if you ever need to by breaking the security.

I use Ovis pdf-Recover. There is also PDFKey Pro, but it was always crashing on me. Since you are engaged in an action that promotes the company there's nothing illegal here. Both these apps though will only give you the first page. So, if what you need is deeper in, you'll have to buy the programs (they're shareware).

I saw you - just as you slipped between the 18th century pagoda and the ornamental rose garden...

Colour seems to be green now. I just sampled it in Photoshop from the logo I'd snaffled off a pdf!

I was hoping that someone 'higher up' would say 'don't be silly of course you've got to give the designer a logo', but it sounds as if they are a bit obsessive about this. Never come across it before.
