How do I create a PDF exported from Quark8 with Bookmarks?!

I'm really struggling to find any useful information on how to create bookmarks that display in the bookmarks palette in Acrobat when the file is exported from Quark. When exporting the file there are options to export 'list' as bookmarks. So I assumed Quark has named the 'bookmark' function (as it's called in Indesign) a list. The list can only be created through style sheets, so I gave it a try, ticked the relevant boxes on export, and still nothing shows in the bookmark palette in Acrobat. Does Quark not have the function of highlighting a piece of text and creating a bookmark form it? I've had a play around with the 'anchor' tool in the hyperlinks palette, thinking that might be the quark equivalent, but nothing happened, infact you can't tag the same bit of text as an anchor and a hyperlink. It might just be a lot less stress to do this in Indesign unless anyone can shed any light on the subject? Thanks.

    Hi,

This feature is available in QuarkXPress, we need to build the list then only the bookmarks will be available in the PDF.

Once you have saved the list, you need to build the list from Window>>List>>Build.

Also make sure that Export Lists as Bookmarks should be checked under File>>Export>>Layout as PDF>>Options.

Hi, Thanks for your reply. I have saved two new styles that I want to appear as bookmarks in the PDF. I have then created a new list and added the two styles. The 'build' button is greyed out. So I went to quark help about building lists and it said I needed to create another text box in the doc and then click build. Thats all great build why am I pasting the same info back into the document? Where am I meant to put this text box? I really don't understand. This process didn't result in any bookmarks appearing in the resulting pdf's with all the bookmark boxes ticked on export. This seems an extremely complicated way of creating something that only requires a click of a button in acrobat and Indesign. Where am I going wrong?

    These are the steps :-

Open QuarkXPress document. Create few styles sheets depending upon your requirement.

Now Make sure that List palette is closed.

Then apply those styles on the pages where you want to have bookmarks.Once that is done then Click on Edit>>Lists.

Click on new List, Add the styles by clicking on arrows then click on ok and save.

Then click on Windows>>List. Create a text box on the last page and then cilck on Build.

Now click on file >>export>>layout as PDF>>options>>check the option Export Lists as bookmarks.

Click on ok and save the PDF.

    I hope this information helps

Hi, Thanks for your help on this, I've followed your instructions to the letter but when I expand the bookmark tab in Acrobat, there's nothing there. I don't really know what else to try. This whole experiment is leading me to believe that bookmarks from quark is a long way round a short corner. Any other suggestions welcome.

I am sorry to have to say this: You are absolutely right in your questions on this matter. I have created a book that is now being printed as we speak. Created the print-file directly from Quark's built-in pdf function. And everything has worked perfect so far. When I now want to create a "high quality" pdf-file from this work, for my customer, exactly the same thing happens to me. The function in itself is very simple and it should work as it has been described to you (I know because I have done this before both in vers 6 and 7 and then it worked fine). I tried to put the list that I created in the end of the book to see if that helped. Well the list is clickable and I can get to the correct place by clicking a post. But I can't create the bookmarks, my field for bookmarks is also empty in the pdf-file. I am also a bit surprised that he says that one has to put this list somwhere in the document, in my case I don't want that. As long as the list is created in it's own "list-window" and it looks ok there it should be possible to export it via the pdf-function without having to actually put it somewhere. I can even see the list I have created when I am in the "export to pdf"-window. It doesn't help if I choose the specific list instead of using the "create bookmarks from all lists". In my case I also have a fairly extensive Index in the book which is clickable (You just click the page number after the index-word in the pdf-file and you will get there). However the links from a cross-reference word unfortunately doesn't work. It should work and the pointer does change when I drag the mouse over this cross reference, indicating that there is a link, but clicking it leaves me with no action. Sorry Quark, this you must do something about. The functionality, as it is supposed to work, is very good and one can create quite advanced functionality by making different lists and using different levels when creating them. Otherwise the program is great (so far)

Thanks for your reply, I thought it was just me thats having problems with this. I know there are still a few gliches with Quark8 - maybe this is just another one of those. I might try it in quark 7 and see if I have any joy. If you do find a solution let me know. I know its very easy to create bookmarks in Acrobat (without adding an extra page to the doc) but I was hoping to just do it all in quark.

Re: How do I create a PDF exported from Quark8 with Bookmarks?!

I've just finished a 288 page book using quark 6.1. I need to have bookmarks for all the table of contents items on the pdf. I've never done this and have looked at the blogs to no avail. I want to list the entire table of contents as bookmarks and link each item to the appropriate page.

I can go edit>lists but can't do anything. or window>show lists. neither allow me to paste table of contents. once they are on the list, how do i make the links? please be explicit, I'm desperate.

    thanks, gvk
