getting old Quark on my new laptop

I've been using Quark on my G4 desktop since 4.0 and upgraded to 6. I recently bought a Mac laptop running OS 10.5.6 and haven't been able to install Quark on it. I have serial numbers and validation codes for both 4.0 and 6 but when it asks for the validation code the number/letter combination I have is not long enough to fill in the boxes. What gives? Which code should I be using? Should I be combining them or something? And yes, I am entering them with all capital letters. Thanks for your time - I'm moving soon and really hope to get this resolved today while I have an internet connection. Thanks again! M

Use the version 6 upgrade installer. There should be a radio button somewhere in the early phase of the installer that tells you something like use previous serial number, or something along those lines. Make sure that is checked and then install. You'll have to enter the old v4.x serial and then the new one (the really long one).

Keep in mind. XPress 6.x was not designed for Leopard and Quark does not support it on Leopard. It will run very cludgy and buggy on Leopard. There is no "patch" to "fix" it for Leopard. Secondly, if this is an Intel Mac (and all newer Mac laptops are) then XPress 6.x will be even slower because XPress 6.x was written for PowerPC (Motorola) chips and not Intel chips. The app will be running through Rosetta which is Apple's translator fron Intel to PowerPC. Apps running through Rosetta are slower because the code has to be translated.

Re: getting old Quark on my new laptop

Hey Erik - i have the 6.1 upgrade in. These are the exact steps I got: enter administrator password option to continue (yes) license agreement (decline or accept) request for validation code At no point is there any option for any kind of entering previous serial number. The validation code I am given has 8 boxes and each holds 6 characters. The code I have has only 31 characters (missing 17 characters) when I enter it, it does nothing, only indicates that it requires more characters. When I cancel it just says it isn't finished installing and am I sure I want to cancel. The serial number is only 13 characters. Any ideas? I am stumped. Thanks, M

What you have is the old serial number from v4.x. Not the validation code for XPress 6.x. You should have received the validation code at some point. If you never did, then you never would have been able to install the upgrade the first time around. You need to find the validation code. The first time I ever had XPress 6 for an old company it was emailed to me. The second time (for the company I work for) it was shipped in the box. I don't know it came for you, but without it you will not be able to install the upgrade.

    Hi, minshine,

liek Erik says, you need a Validation Code, not the Serial Number. If the license of QuarkXPress is registered to you or unregistered, then just call customer service with the Serial Number and they can help you get a Validation Code.
