    Re: Books about QuarkXPress 8

    Hi, All:

I can add Kevin Siegal's "QuarkXPress 8, the Basics", which is the first of three planned QXP8 books from IconLogic. It is part of their "Skills & Drills" series and has a very direct (almost military) approach to taking the elements of QuarkXPress and running them through a bunch of progressively complex basic projects. The book is only about 150 pages but there are QXP8 files on the IconLogic website that you must download for the exercises.

Do the drills. Get the skills.

I am checking the IconLogic website every few weeks in case Kevin pops out the next volume when I'm not looking.

I have a copy of Cindy Shaftstall's "QuarkXPress 8: production tricks and experts' tips". Huge book and it lies flat because it is spiral ring-bound. Lots of brilliant essays from noted authorities. Very readable. Very enjoyable.

And I also picked up a copy of the NobleDesktops QXP8 Step by Step training manual. This one is absolutely dense. Compressed. And expensive. An incredible amount of information (but it is the text-book for a course that is designed to be taught by an instructor in a classroom). You have to be truly fanatically obsessed and very motivated in order to use this book without the benefit of an instructor. Not for beginners. Probably the very book for someone incarcerated with a new iMac and a copy of QXP8...

I think I probably reviewed all three of these books in the DoubleClick sometime last year.

The ones I'm waiting for are now are the QXP8 Visual QuickStart Guide and Against The Clock's Creating Digital Documents with QXP8.

    Hi, Binky,

thanks for this. And I have added IconLogic's book to the list.

The other two I haven't seen yet out on the shelves, going to be interesting to hear your opinion about it. Now you just need to read the German and Spanish ones Wink.

Matthias: It will have to be English. Unfortunately, I do not read or write any other languages. However, I do have a Macintosh computer that does that for me so I don't have to.

Sometimes I get an early copy of printed stuff before it is published & have to wait until after the release date to write about it.

I ordered a copy of the Peachpit Press "QuarkXPress 8: Essential Skills for Page Layout and Web Design", book yesterday after seeing it on your QuarkXPress 8 book list and will be writing a short book report as soon as it arrives.

    Probably next week.

I can add another book to your book list and this is one that never leaves the office: I have a copy of Chuck Green's QuarkXPress IDEABOOK, one of a series of IDEABOOKS he has created for QXP, InDesign & PageMaker.

The QuarkXPress IDEABOOK is not specifically for QXP8 but it does work with QXP8 and every version of QXP from 4.1 on up. It is a 250-page illustrated marketing template book with a CD. A wide range of commercial templates for the user to copy & paste into. All of the templates ( or PrePages) in the book are on the CD and I have found this one useful for a wide range of small custom jobs where I need to print up stuff like a one-page info request that needed to be folded into the shape of an envelope & returned by mail, DVD case inserts and little booklets to include with CDs in jewel cases.

Says on the cover : "Start your next project with most of the work already done."

Here's something that may be of interest: it looks like a free downloadable user guide for people interested in teaching QXP8

See location of download link at the bottom of this message

This Teacher Resource Guide has everything you need to get you and your students up-to-speed with QuarkXPress. The Guide is applicable for students learning the software for the first time as well as experienced QuarkXPress users. It is available for both Mac and PC users in a single, 317-megabyte downloadable file. The Guide contains a sample syllabus, 14 training modules, and an outline for deploying the modules in a classroom environment. The syllabus includes a capstone project for students to develop as part of the course, with class-time suggestions, and a sample grading scale

The training modules are designed with standard system fonts, so it is easy to deploy in your class as well as for take-home work. You can teach the software from start to finish, or you can pick and choose individual modules that complement your class.

Anyone brand new to page layout or QuarkXPress should start with module one — QuarkXPress Basics — and get up to speed quickly with the essential elements of working in QuarkXPress, from creating a new project to collecting for output. To prepare your students with basic skills for the creative job market, you will want to cover core modules in Text and Typography, Page Elements, Transparency and Drop Shadows, and PDF Output.

You can also explore more advanced topics such as Job Jackets and Shared Content to broaden your students’ skills in work-flow and collaborative design.

As for the Spanish one, and not having read it, it is from ANAYA Multimedia so it is going to be the lowest side of the totem, pretty much straight from the user manual… I still have the one for QXP 6. Matthias, I can look for a copy and send it to you if you're willing to read it :)
Typefaces don’t come with an instruction manual.
