    Apple is it really Green?

If Apple really wanted to go green don't you think they could release a Logic Board to swap out our beautiful G-5 PPC cases. I have invested around $5000.00 in this 3 YR old PPC G-5 2.3 GHz Duel Core 16 gigs of ram and a beautiful case. Instead if I want to move on with the new up-grade, Intel Mac I would have to spend, $5000.00 or much more with that DDR3 ram, wait would one not have to purchase upgraded software?  I hope Quark and many others continue to support the PPC G-5...

There will be support for now. But the PPC's lifespan is coming to an end soon (at least as far as dedicated support goes). Snow Leopard will be released soon and I understand that it will be Intel Mac only. When that happens support for Tiger and Leopard (and PPC Macs) will begin to slowly decrease. The downside to this continued support though is increased cost. Apps have to be tested on both platforms. And that cost is passed along to you. And IMO since a development focus is on two different versions of whatever app we happen to be talking about there is less attention that is able to be spared to both. Which means, more bugs. Which means more testing and more costs to fix those bugs.

I've been looking at it in light of the old 64K/PPC (Fat) switch. It's the same thing.

As to your point on the logic board I don't see it happening. That would require a level of sophistication to install that frankly you aren't going to find in the average Mac user. "I did it in Adobe!" being one of the most common statements I have heard from this group. Then you have to think about the case. Apple COULD do this, but the chances that your older case is going to have the same pre-fabricated cutouts that the new motherboard needs is probably not likely. Sure, Apple could say, bring it in to the Apple store and we'll do it for you, but I just don't see too many sales in that approach.

I don't think the impact on new software will be too bad. Most apps released today are Universal. And since Snow Leopard will only run on Intel Macs, you'd have to purchase a new Intel Mac anyway – but your Universal software most likely would still be able to run on the new Mac.

I'm not trying to shoot you down. I'm just pointing out what I see. Yes, $5000+ is a lot of investment, but the advancement of tech never seems to care about that.

This is unlikely to be slow and more like the 64K/vs PPC, (remember having to pay Quark money so that you can crossgrade from Quark4 to ...err Quark4 PPC). Adobe announced ages ago that CS5 will be intel only. Software companies are going to be falling over themselves to rush out new software thats intel only, they don't have to develop for PPC which saves them money and they can charge lots of existing users who need to keep up... happy days.Party!!!

I wish my investment was only $5000... I'm now looking into upgrading for CS5 release... Have a crack at trying get it under $70,000 for G5 towers and $50,000 for iMac. Mac Mini's come in at 30 odd grand... I need 18 of them, and that's not including relevant software upgrades... And people wonder why small businesses are failing.

You got it, not only that the US leads all countries with E-waste. The equipment that is supposed to be recycled appears to go to third world areas, pay the poor folks 8¢ an hour, give them cancer or who knows what else. Well I guess the countries affected are cracking down on the US exporters and sending the junk back. So what do we do with this waste? How many of you would vote to have it next to your homes or schools, or your state? How about storing nuclear waste in you back yard, or state? Yes I also am a waste creator but I do try, so I ask the question Apple, is it really Green? I think things could have been worked out to re-use some of our computers. Why yes as you ask, cool  striped down code makes my Mac faster. So how much does this affect the small business owner, ask marcusstriinger? I am sure many, many others can say the same.

I am retired so I don't have to upgrade, not that I would not like to but...it is not green enough. Now saying that I would buy a used Intel Mac.

Well, I'll just have to soldier on with my G5 PPC and the software I've got; being retired (and not at all rich!) what I've got will have to last until I win a lottery or two ...!

    PowerMac G5, 2.7DP, 8Gb RAM; OSX 10.4.11 and 10.5.8 (on separate drives). (Also a PowerMac 7300 that's still running Quark 4.1 on OS 8.6 ...)
