Threads not grayed out after reading ... and what do star and pencil icons mean?

Threads not grayed out after reading ... and what do star and pencil icons mean?

I just upgraded from Tiger to Leopard and need help sorting out the forum's protocols. Used to be when I'd viewed a thread or a post, it was then grayed out. This doesn't happen any more which makes it kind of tough to sort through the stuff you've read and the stuff you haven't. Also, I can't remember what the star and pencil icons represent, and can't seem to find an explanation of them anywhere. Are them some settings/preferences I'm not seeing? Another issue is all my paragraphs smushing together in one long thread. I'm on a Mac, OS 10.5.8, with Safari, and it appears to be the culprint. Eric Y. suggested Firefox, so I tried that, but it also smushes paragraphs together. One more silly issue. I just updated my personal profile and tried to add my web site, but it told me the address was an invalid URL. My website, www.maggiedana.com is working fine (as of 30 seconds ago). What browsers are others using? Many thanks, Maggie

Murphy's Law just kicked in. The minute I posted this, the threads I'd already read were grayed out. So please ignore that question. However, what do the star and pencil icons mean? Of course, with Murphy in full force, this conundrum will no doubt be answered the minute I hit 'send.' And I'm still getting smushed paragraphs, so that's a whole 'nother issue. Suggestions, anyone?

Hi Maggie. The forums here have a high latency rate on the cache. If you want to see a good example of this, make a post and then go back to the forum home page and refresh your browser. You won't see any mention of your new post in the listings. You'll see it in Active Discussions and Your Discussions, but not on the forum lists. It can take up to five minutes to show up!

The reason I mention this is that probably has something to do with the issue you were having about grayed out (read) posts. As to your smushed paragraphs my guess here would be that it's either some combination of your fonts overriding Quark's CSS or just a font issue in general. You might try telling your browser to try a different font. That's about all I have at the moment.

P.S.. If you are pasting in your web address in your profile, don't include the http:// part. The forums here operate strictly on html code and I believe the form already assumes http://. So if you paste in say, http://google.com the forums see http://http://google.com. That of course is not a valid web address.

Hi Eric: I'll check out my browser's font issue (wonder if it's the dreaded Leopard/Helvetica conundrum I haven't yet dealt with); as for my URL. I didn't paste, but rather entered my website, which is www.maggiedana.com, but it refused to accept it. I didn't put in the http bit, either. Given that good old Murphy is dogging my footsteps today, I'll give it another go. Maggie

Maggie. I think I may have my wires crossed here. I just looked at my own website in my profile and I'm showing that there is an actual http:// preceding my web address. So. Obviously I'm completely wrong on that account. Try entering http:// and then your web address and see if it takes it.

Hi Eric: Crossed wires? Mine have been crossed for ever. Anyway, you're right about the http bit. I added it before the www bit and my profile accepted it. Trouble is, I can't figure out where it's supposed to show up. At the end of my posts (which it doesn't, so far), or just on my profile? Sorry for asking all these questions, and I really appreciate your help. You'd think, after all this time, I'd have it figured out by now, but I don't. Clearly, upgrading to Leopard and Quark 7.5 at the same time has gotten my knickers in a right old twist. And what about the pencils and stars? I'm still trying to figure out their logic. It only shows in your profile. Try clicking on your username and you'll see a clickable link for your website. You can also put it in your signature (as you have done), but it takes a little html coding to make it clickable in your signature.

As to your other inquiry I really can't say. When they put these forums up they didn't really indicate to us what all the icons meant. Personally to me what you are describing looks like a magic wand. But that's just me!

Re: Threads not grayed out after reading ... and what do star and pencil icons mean?

If you hover over the icons you should see a tool tip indicating their meaning. The stars indicate a popular post and the pencil simply indicates a post. The color designates if you have viewed it or not. Hope that makes sense. Also, I am thinking that the greying out of read items has to do with client side caching as it's immediate on my end using safari on windows.
