Smile [:)] Type-1 issues fixed under Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and QuarkXPress 8.12

    Hi, all,

we are happy to inform you that Apple just released Mac OS X 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard) which - to our knowledge and testing - fixes the issues with Type-1 fonts shifting (reported here).

Please make sure you have updated to QuarkXPress 8.12.

If you have already migrated (or are planning to migrate) to Snow Leopard, please test thoroughly whether all issues are now fixed before using Snow Leopard in a production environment.

Please let us know your experience!

    Best regards
    Matthias

Awesome! Sorry to see Quark take so much heat over a Mac OS X issue. Don

Glad to report back that all issues have been fixed! Documents created in Q8.1 (and prior) on Leopard, and Snow Leopard 10.6.1 all work perfectly.

"and prior" meaning earlier versions of Quark? Anyone using Quark 7 with Snow Leopard?

    Hi, RLParrish,

as QuarkXPress 7 and 8 use the same Type-1 Font API, it should also now work fine with QuarkXPress 7. Just be aware that Quark doesn't officially support version 7 under Snow Leopard (only under Leopard and Tiger). In any case you should test this yourself before using it in a production environment.

QuarkXPress 8 is officially supported under Snow Leopard (and Leopard and Tiger), should you encounter any issues please use our (free) technical support (via Chat or Email).

    Thanks

First test with me show that things appear fixed on my home iMac. Need to spend time checking, but I feel that I can think about taking jobs home again to work on at the weekends. I don't know if I should be pleased or not! :| Thank you.

Not sure that this is the case at all. I am having major issues and the very helpful support in India sem to be signalling that, in my particular case at least, there still is an issue with the upgraded Q8.15 and Type 1 fonts.

    Hi redbarn,

yes, there are still issues with Type-1 fonts and Snow Leopard.

We do know of some and the Apple Discussion forums show non-QuarkXPress users also experiencing issues with Type-1 fonts under Snow Leopard.

    Thanks

Re: Type-1 issues fixed under Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and QuarkXPress 8.12

There are some fonts, in particular The Mix and The Sans that gave me some problems under Snow Leopard, but I think I have found a fix for most of them.

If you have a copy of Font Doctor, you can run these troublesome fonts through it and reorganise the suitcases using Font Family names rather than just font names. After doing this, The Mix and The Sans as well as one or two other fonts that use lots of separate suitcases seem to load up just fine.

Before running them through Font Doctor, the fonts would not activate at all when using FontExplorer X Pro.

I hope this is useful for someone....

Re: Type-1 issues fixed under Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and QuarkXPress 8.12

Thanks for that tip. I did buy FontDoctor and run it, not sure how successfully.

I sent a file which I was having major crash problems on to tech support. It crashed for them too under OS 10.6 but worked under OS 10.5.

However Apple tell me that OS 10.6.2 is 'hard-wired' into my iMac and so I cannot go back!

I decided to do some expeiments on my own. I created two NEW files both containing the identical text one using a system font–Geneva–and the other using a Type1 font Sabon which is used in a document which is also causing me problems.

I tried a lot of different operations on both files including a search and replace operation that had more than 55,000 instances. It took a while but neither file crashed under any of the tests.

I also managed to copy  text from an old file and paste it into a NEW document I created. In the old file when I went to 'check usage' it crashed in the new one no crash.  I pasted the text checked usage and it did not crash. I performed multiple operations on the new file and it did not crash either.

So my insight, which I am quite happy to have proved wrong, suggests to me that it is not just a Type 1 issue but it also seems to be linked to 'legacy' files. I have not done exhaustive testing, but any file I have created in v8.15 from scratch seems to work but older files opened in v8.15 do have problems.

The most recent post I can find on the type1 font issues is this one from Nov 2009. It is now nearly April 2010. Despite all available updates, my problems continue, however. It is insane of Apple to disable such universal fonts.

I am able to use my type1 helvetica neue fonts in CS4, by putting them in the app support/adobe/font folder--very nice dodge.

I hope there is also a workaround for Quark 8.1.6 by now--is there? Can I redirect qxp to get fonts elsewhere than osx?

    Hi Anette,

QuarkXPress receives the list of available fonts from the OS, so you need to either work with tools provided by the OS (FontBook) or 3rd party tools (Extensis, Linotype etc.).

By the way, an interesting article about Helvetica, Helvetica Neue and OS X can be read here:
