    Quark and HTML5

When will future quark upadats allow quark to export HTML5? Now would be the time and HTML5 the method to jump ahead of adobe.

    Hi woodka,

of course we are monitoring the development in the HTML arena. As currently the HTML5 specs are in draft state, it is a bit early to comment on this.

As of today we have many customers doing true multi-channel design and publishing and they use our products and solutions to output to Print, PDF, HTML, XHTML, SWF (Flash) and also iPhone and iPad.

    Regards

Interesting, I've been using quarkxpress to develop multimedia projects for about 2 years now and I was not aware that it could output for iPhone and iPad. Can you elaborate on this subject?  I am currently developing an online news stand much like zinio.com.
I have had to switch (even in light of last weeks apple adobe war)  to Flash CS5 to develop my project. I would very much like more information on how I can output for the iPhone and the iPad
Below are some examples of my work created with quark, the first is an online magazine.

It would be great to publish XPress documents directly to iPad. But I didn't understand how this works with animated content. Flash isn't supported by iPad. How's about a 4th kind of layout: HTML 5?

    Re: Quark and HTML5

Apple will not support Adobe Flash. If we, as publishers of print magazine content, do not have the tools to publish our content on every platform posable we will suffer the effects of those that do publish where we do not. I have been a QXP user since 3.0 and plan on continuing my relationship. I am currently transitioning my business plan from print to internet content. I think the success of the iPad is enough evidence that the magazine format it still a viable form factor. Some say publish in .pdf but I find that lacking in user experience compared to the flash based magazine I am publishing now. Will Apple allow the Adobe .pdf magazine to display in the book store or as an app? No, I don't think so! HTML5 is the answer I will be looking for, I hope I will find it at Quark very soon.

Hi Matthias, Really keen to discover more about creating files that are iPad savvy. Please could you elaborate on your previous answer or head me in the right direction to find out for myself please. Any help with who these customers are that you mention who are producing for iPad at the moment would also be really helpful. Many thanks.

    Hi all,

unfortunately I am currently not allowed to reveal which customer publishes to iPad since beginning of April, I am sure you understand.

We will be able to announce soon how you can publish from Quark products to the iPad or iPhone.

Please send me an email (by using the Contact button in this post) in case you want somebody from Quark contacting you to evaluate what we can do for you today.

    Best regards
    Matthias

In a prior response, you wrote the following: As of today we have many customers doing true multi-channel design and publishing and they use our products and solutions to output to Print, PDF, HTML, XHTML, SWF (Flash) and also iPhone and iPad. My company is currently leveraging all of its resources to publish an iPad edition of an existing magazine. Your response alludes to outputting to iPad via Quark, yet my designer insists that Quark does not support any outputting to html5. Can you please answer the following question: Can I design a magazine in Quark then output it to html5 and sell it as an app in Apple's app store while taking full advantage of all of iOS4 dynamic platform, not just page flipping and 100% page-by-page rendering, but transitioning Also, is your response related to the abilities of your software partner, Dynamic Publishing? And how soon will you be announcing how we can publish to iPad?

    Re: Quark and HTML5

    Hi Giorgio,

I suppose the question is directed at me.

I am a bit confused about HTML5 being available as an APP via the App Store. HTML documents should just play in the browser and do not need to be downloaded via the App Store. Apple and Google have shown some experimental web pages using HTML5, it looks promising and the new standard will hopefully be released soon. And we are watching this closely and will provide HTML5 output in future. Also what the next version of ePub plans looks promising.

However, your question was what you can do today: Dynamic Publishing is not a software partner, it is the term we use to describe where we think publishing will go into the future. All our products will help you to publish dynamically and Digital Publishing 2.0 (so to new devices) is part of it.

So what can you do today? Today you can export HTML and PDF to the iPad, which in some cases might be sufficient and - as you are also suggesting - most customers find boring. Furthermore we have customers using custom Apps that take exported content out of QuarkXPress and bring it to the iPad/iPhone. As custom apps might be something everybody can do or can afford to do, we have also identified standard solutions.

First possibility is that you can use NewsGator's TapLynx to export content to the iPad/iPhone, which is available today. Furthmore we will offer the solutions mentioned below.

    iPadBound:
And how soon will you be announcing how we can publish to iPad?

    We have announced it: http://www.quark.com/pressdetail.aspx?nid=2476&lang=us

After TapLynx the next step will be an export to the Blioreader, coming this fall. Blioreader will be available on iPhone, iPad, Android etc. Also ePub export is on the roadmap. iPad allows to view ePubs. Plus we are working on a solution for you to create your own, branded digital publishing apps.

The complete roadmap can be found here: http://dynamicpublishing.quark.com/pdfs/Quark_DigitalPub20_Roadmap.pdf

    Does that explain it?

    Re: Quark and HTML5

So we're 2011 and now is the time to tell small Quark users if there is a new roadmap with a place for everybody. We need to produce interactive content to Safari browser on iPhone and iPad, that mean without Flash. Just improve a little bit the Web layout to integrate some visual effects and interactivity or better: export QID to Html5. Will this be ?

    Re: Quark and HTML5

Hi Matthias - I have a couple of questions. The first being a conversion tool for flash to html5 so that the sites I have designed in Quark can be viewed with the built in flash on iPads, iPhones, as well as the new Safari, now that I have upgraded to Lion. Also, I have upgraded to quark 9 and when I open my web documents, all of the visuals that are shared have shifted within the photo boxes. I have to open in Quark 8 to avoid having to re-place them all in. Also is there a "collect for output" option or something similar for web documents as there is for print documents? Switching from my office computer to my home computer it is very easy to miss an element, please advise. Thank you Janine Calise

    Re: Quark and HTML5

    Hi Janine,

Quark doesn't offer a product to convert Flash to HTML5 and we probably also never will. We believe in crossmedia publishing, which means writing to all these formats, ideally from a single source.

In my opinion it is the wrong strategy to first freeze everything into a specific media (with all its restrictions and attributes) and then try to create other formats out of it. The better way seem to be to create content first, enrich that with media and audience specific attributes and export it to the formats needed.

So in the light of QuarkXPress, create one project with HTML and Flash (or iPad layouts), keep content and formatting synchronized where it makes sense, add media specifics and then export all three formats.

From a system point of view you can even go a step further by using Word or other input editors to create structured content in familair tools without exposing knowledge workers to technology (like XML).

For the problems, may I ask you to contact Tech Support (or I can ask them to contact you). Also, you could try converting your document (option opening up to thumbnail drag).

And to collect for output, temporarily convert your web layout to print and then collect, that could be a good workaround. Does that work?

    Thanks
    Matthias
