    New computer installation

I just received my upgrade copy for Quark 8 but have some installation questions.  I currently have version 7.5 (Windows).

Within the next six months, I will be getting a new computer system.  If I install the version 8 upgrade on my current computer now, will I be able to install the entire program later on my new system?  I have a single-user license.

    Thanks ~ Tracie

Yes, you will. The EULA allows you to have XPress installed on two machines at one time. You cannot use them concurrently, but you can install on two machines. Two Macs, two PCs, or one PC and one Mac. The same goes for XPress 7.x and 6.x. The EULA was revised to allow this several years ago.

    Hi Tracie,

additional to what Erik said, it is also possible to deactivate an installation by using the menu item, so that you can shuffle around your two activations yourself.

    Thanks

And that's very fair! The Badia Xtensions use the same thing so you can also install them on both computers if you have some.

    Re: New computer installation

I didn't want to start a new thread so I'm piggy backing this one....

I just upgraded to a MacBook Pro at my design studio and installed Quark 7. I also installed the 7.5 updater no problem, but I cannot open Quark at all. Everytime I open the program it crashes within 5-10 seconds. Any ideas? I've tried all the lame-mans stuff I know...trashing preferences, etc.

    Thanks in advance!

    Re: New computer installation

     OK Details.

This will explain the issue in depth.

Briefly. Late 2009, Apple introduces new models of Mac that have a new firewire archtecture. This interferes with activation of XPress 7.x and 8.x. Quark releases an update (8.1.5) for 8.x in January 2010. Quark does NOT release a fix for 7.x. Quark won't ever release a fix because 7.x is not supported on SL.

Your options are to either downgrade to Leopard (impossible with a new MBP) or upgrade to 8.x. There is no other solution I'm sorry to say.

    Quark Installation

I presently have Quark 8.5 on my desktop at home and use it on my own laptop only when on holiday as I have to send magazine by certain date. Would it be possible for me to put it on the laptop in the office, still in my name so that I can do some training in Quark. I don't feel that I should have to buy another licence. The office already has Quark 6.5 but the new laptop is Windows Vista and as we know it is not compatible with 6.5.That is why I had to buy the 8.5 upgrade in the first place for my new desktop computer. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

    Many many thanks.

    Hi bh99mh,

your EULA allows you to install and activate a single license of QuarkXPress on two computers as long as you are not using them simultaneously at any given time.

So the use case you are describing (activate it on three computers) is not allowed under your license agreement. However you can deactivate it fromone of your computers and then activate the license on another. Is that an option?

    Thanks

    Re: Quark Installation

Many thanks for your prompt reply. That has given me something to think about. Am I right in thinking that I can de-activate it on my desktop computer when I am going on holiday and activate it on my laptop for the duration of my holiday and then re-activate it on my desktop when I return. The only time I use it on my laptop is when I am on holiday away from home, maybe once or twice a year?

This would certainly solve my problem as I could then use the other activation on the office laptop and leave it on there for when I go into the office.

Following on from that, how do I de-activate it when needed? Thank you for your patience. Smile

    Hi bh99mh,

yes, that's correct. Are you on Mac or on Windows?

On OS X you find the "Transfer QuarkXPress License" menu point under the QuarkXPress menu, on Windows under Help.

    Thanks

    Re: Quark Installation

Thanks a million. I think I've cracked it! If I de-activate it on my desktop when on holiday I can activate it on my laptop and it would still be active on my desktop for 30 days anyway. I won't be away for any more than 3 weeks maximum and I would just re-activate it on my desktop on my return. So that would be using just one instal and switching between desktop and laptop.

I can now use the office laptop as the 2nd computer to upgrade 8.5 on and leave it there and that would solve the problem of Windows Vista.

I hope I'm correct but would like to thank you for your invaluable advice. Smile

    Hi bh99mh,

    you are welcome.

Just one last note please: When you purchased an upgrade, remember that you can use the upgrade to upgrade ONE licence of QuarkXPress, not multiple. With license I basically mean serial number. So if the license you are currently use on both machines is the same, then your are ok to go. If you have two different licences of QuarkXPress 6, your upgrade will just upgrade one of them.

No there won't be a problem there as the 6.5 is the same upgrade on both machines with the same Serial Number. Thanks again.

    Wrong.

You can run 6.5 on XP, Vista and Win7. Just run in XP Compatability mode. Now, XPress 6.5 is not CERTIFIED to run on Win7, but that does not mean it WON'T run.

Plenty of people have come through here and managed to get 4.x and 5.x to run on Vista and Win7. So, 6.5 shouldn't be an issue.
