Quarkxpress 9.2 is hanging: Error 257 bad allocation

Hello, I have spent last days trying to solve my problem with Quarkxpress 9.1 and and now 9.2 with no success. The problem is that with 9.1 it was often hanging when opening several quark projects at a time with "Application hanged" message and sometimes with Error 257 bad allocation message, but with 9.2 its now always hanging with Error 257 bad allocation message. It happens when opening several projects at a time. This is Core i7 based PC with 16Gb of RAM and I am surprised that several files would cause issues on this PC when there were no problems on older core2duo with 3GB or RAM and Quark 5 where these projects were created. Any ideas what would cause this? I am on Windows 7 64bit version now. Previously Quark 5 was installed on Windows XP 32bit version.

It could be because of a single file among the set of files that you are opening at the same time. Please keep an eye and find the file that causes the error. Then, try and open that file alone. Does that work.

Do you get a crash log? If yes, please post here.

It may not be the same file issue as on Windows XP Quarkxpress 9 is able to open as many projects as I like. I have copied these files/folder to Windows and tried to open them and they have opened without any issues. Where may I see the crash log? It seems that Quarkxpress 9.2 isnt so friendly with Windows 7 64 bit. Here is what I have observed. With 9.2 a single file is opening fine. In 9.1 even a single file could become an issue and was causing Quark to crash. When I am opening more than one project in 9.2 quarkxpress.exe start growing very fast. If the project is 100mb in size then once I open it in Quark, the quarkxpress.exe would rise about twice of the file size. The problem begins when i am opening more than 2 projects and the quarkxpress.exe is grows above 927mb+. Once it grows above that size it returns error 257 bad allocation error and crashes. This PC has 16Gb of RAM(4x4GB) and its definitely not the problem. All other programs work fine(Photoshop/Corel with multiple open files etc). I have installed XP mode and then Quark 9.2 in Windows XP and multiple files are opening fine there and also quarkxpress.exe is consuming much less memory as well. So the problem should be Windows 7 64bit related.

The RAM usage should not be that high.

Lets see if some corrupt Preferences are causing this, please create new Preferences as explained below:

    1. Quit QuarkXPress if running.

    2. Navigate to C:\Users\<Logged In User>\AppData\Local\Quark. Rename (or Delete) the folder named "QuarkXPress 9".

    3. Relaunch QuarkXPress.

Are you able to open multiple files now?

I have tried to delete and make Quark to recreate new preferences file with no success.

I have not been able to reproduce the issue at my end. Do you see a "QuarkXPress Rescue" folder on the desktop? Please send me an e-mail using the "Contact" button, I would need more details to troubleshoot the issue.
