Retain bold & italic formatting using paragraph style sheets

    Using Quark 8 - Mac OS 10.6.8

Is there a way to keep the bold and italic formatting  when importing text and selecting paragraph styles? Working on a book with about one italicized word per paragraph. Please tell me there's a way to format the text using paragraph styles and not loose all the italics.

If thre is a way to do this in quark 9 but not in quark 8, please let me know.

In version 9 when selecting a style sheet you can right click on the style sheet name and select the option "Apply style sheet and Retain Local type style", that will reset all the other attributes except Bold, Italics, Underline etc. I hope thats what you are looking for...

To be honest I myself never work with italics and bold to be kept, I mean I reformat systematically every text I get. Well that’s my habit.

To answer your question, can’t you create character style sheets for italics and bolds, apply them to any word that needs it via Search/Replace, then apply para style sheets so the local formattings are kept? Don’t know if I’m clear enough nor wether it works properly. As for a way of doing it that in 9, I think it’s part of the new features. See further info on Quark’s site. HTH.

EDIT: Oops! Sorry AD I didn’t see your reply.

Does that only work when using bold, italics, underline styles applied to the roman version of a font? Because that kind of italics looks different from the font foundry's version of italics.

Is there a way that character styles can override paragraph styles in Quark 8?

    Thanks,
    Diane

    Re: Jean-Marie Schwartz

But what if you had hundreds of pages and there were only a few words in about half of the paragraphs throughout. Wouldn't you want to be able to style the paragraphs but keep the italics and use the font foundry italics not the applied styles "i" ?

Well if you Alt-click the char style in the palette AFTER you’ve selected the para style, this char style do overwrite para style. And if you want fake italics to be replaced with true italics, then you can S&R italic styled text with true italics (like Font Italic). Are you with me?

Unless I mssed sth, if you apply para style to text and some text is italicized, italics are kept. Am I wrong? (I might be.) And if italics are kept, then you can easily perform a reg Search/Replace: searching for text italicized, replacing with char style. (Developping the options in the S&R window you access lots of properties).

Sadly yes it works for Bold italics only and not for Font. There is another option you can try, that is "option+shift+click style sheet" that will reset all the paragraph attribute but ignore any character style overrides, Will that work?
