Wotcha Guys
First time posting on here and I guess like most newbies it's because I'm stumped, normally a bit of browsing or consultation with the combined brains of my companies Quark savvy users and we can usually solve or work around most problems but not this bouncing baby show-stopper!
The background; We are deploying quite a few new iMac Quad i5's (10.6.8 - not brave or stupid enough to do 10.7 in a mixed environment just yet) with Quark 8.5.1 installed to do all stuff the Production bods have to do to produce our books (yep you guessed it I'm IT support and therefore know nowt about using Quark or anything creative at all for that matter!).
Two machine are in and the problem is that for both of them NEW Quark projects can not be saved (either locally or on a net volume), even saving totally blank new projects causes Quark to SPOD and the machine to spasm in outrage in a very irksome way. OLD projects created in earlier versions of Quark 8 (8.1.62 I think, on 10.4.11 builds) or 7 are absolutely fine and can be happily changed, saved and generally hacked around with on the new machines, no problems at all.
My initial reaction was to torch the Quark Prefs which our Production Manager had specifically created for the new installs and much to her chagrin everything worked fine. We decided to play further before working through all her changes and found that we could use her Prefs if we ditched the c300 Hyphenation Exceptions. Showing a usual lack of intuition I decided to try to see if any of the Exceptions were causing the issue but only succeeded in wasting a couple of hours of my life.
So I'm guessing that the Hyphenation Exceptions are somehow clashing with our Quark Pref changes (remember default Prefs are fine) - is this possible and have anyone of you guys experienced something similar in the past?
One more possibly relevant bit of info is that we installed FontExlporer X Pro 3 on these machines and this does play with default font folders etc and I did see some ruggered up rogue characters being inserted into the Exceptions whilst I was futsing with them so it is possible that this could be the cause although I can't see why.
Hope someone can throw me a bone here!
