Quark Update can’t check for updates

I know I'm a version behind with my Quark 8, but whenever I check for updates from the Quark menu I get the error:

Quark Update can’t check for updates
An error occurred while checking for updates.

Does anyone know why (I have no problems with my internet connection)? Can I download an installer/updater, like we used to be able to?

    Many thanks.

PS. I can't believe Mac users still have to ad html paragraph tags to posts to make them show up properly in these forums! Or is it only me?

Re: Quark Update can’t check for updates

The update server has never really worked and is still not really working. I've been told that it's perfectly functional, but I don't see it with XPres 8.x. You can still manually download updates and apply them.

The paragraph issue is not about Mac users. It's about Safari. These forums do not support Safari. So if you do not wish to have to enter the para tags, use a different browser.

It was suggested that this was to be fixed about five years ago. They still have not fixed it.

You can complain here and here by sending an email, although after five years I suspect there is zero intent to fix it.

    Hi spaceprobe,

the Auto Updater only works for QuarkXPress 9 (and higher).

We are not planning to release another update for QuarkXPress 8. The last (and free) update for QuarkXPress 8 is version 8.5.1 and can be found in the download section.

I got the very same message as spaceprobe with 9.1 and 9.2.

    Hi spaceprobe & rcantin,

I just checked from home and no problem at all:

Are you both on OS X? Which version please? Both in Canada?

    Thanks

Matthias, I can get this exact same dialogue box when checking in XPress 8.x. The issue has always been using the updater to download an update. It will check and tell you there is an update if there is one, but it's the downloading and applying part that's not working. At least in version 8.x.

And now, apparently with rcantin in 9.x.

    Hi Erik,

we seem to be talking about two different scenarios here: If I understood it correctly, rcantin gets an error message saying "Quark Update can’t check for updates. An error occurred while checking for updates."

That's a typical message when the Auto Updater cannot reach Quark's Update Server, so no update is downloaded and applied yet.

I must add that I got this message with QuarkXPress 8 too. But as Matthias already said The «Check for Updates» option is supposed to be fix for 9 only.

I wonder if it can be cause by the program looking for an oversea server as it did for my activation code. The program «thinking» I'm in France because my language is set to «French».

Re: Quark Update can’t check for updates

Hi Matthias. Thanks for your reply.

Auto update used to work - I received a couple of upgrades with it.

It seems a bit stupid to switch it off for users of version 8 - especially before all the updates for version 8 have been released.

Who at Quark thought this was a good idea and showed loyalty and gratitude to long-standing customers? I've given quark thousands of UK pounds since 1991, when I first bought it, and every time I suffer this kind of "thanks for your business" I wonder why.

Just to be clear: I'm on Quark 8.5. Auto update was switched off for me before it updated me to 8.5.1

are you using anything that redirects ports or do you mean our normal IP detection? As the activation server and update server are different, it might be the reason but not necessarily. I'll ask.

    Thanks

    Hi spaceprobe,

    spaceprobe:
It seems a bit stupid to switch it off for users of version 8 - especially before all the updates for version 8 have been released.

we didn't switch off the Auto Updater, we just didn't fix it anymore. The reason is simple, when we supplied Auto Updater with QuarkXPress 8.5 and it delivered version 8.5.1 to the first users, we noticed a bug causing lots of traffic. To fix that we had to release a new version which we did for version 9, that's why it is working now. To do that for verison 8 we would have to deliver a 8.5.2 which would never deliver anything as we are not planning to provide any updates for version 8 anymore. Does that make our motivation clear? Of course we value our customers who are using previous versions and we alsooffer support for QuarkXPress .

And you won't be notified by Auto Updater that version 9 is available, as that's an upgrade (and not free of charge).

To install version 8.5.1 you can just download it from our website and install it manually.

And going forward you will get notifications of a new updates to version 9 via Auto Updater and install them automatically. Additionally have the alternative to download manually.

    Thanks
    Matthias

Thank you for your reply, Matthias.

I dont use anything special to connect on the Internet. I mentionned the activation issue I had in the past so maybe it could be the same but that was just a guess.
