    Ace_Tip #2: "Hanging" boxes

    Platform: Mac and PC
    Applications: Quark XPress
    XTensions: none

    Hi all,

I found this one totally by accident and been using it ever since...

In doing text books, I try to anchor as many elements as I can since images most-likely go hand in hand with the text. I do not however always want these images to go "inside" the text flow but rather in the margin or at least outside of the "visual" text area. We use to have such pictures "floating" in the page and we had to move them everytime we edited the text that went with it. not anymore...

This following trick will work with any anchored boxes (Picture, text or line).

    Here's the procedure: [list=1:b5ecefff27]
  • Create a picture or text box containing the element you want to "extend" the text box.
  • Change the tool to Drag Tool (The four-points arrow tool).
  • Select the Edit->Cut menu or type Command+X (Mac), CTRL+X (PC).
  • Change the tool to Contents Tool (The Cursor/Hand tool).
  • Select the text box that will contain the hanging element.
  • Place the insertion point (click) where you want to insert that element.
  • Select the Edit->Paste menu or type Command+V (Mac), CTRL+V (PC).
  • Select the box you have just pasted.
  • Select the Item->Modify menu or type Command+M (Mac), CTRL+M (PC).
  • Select the Runaround tab.
  • Set the values of the sides you want extending the text box to a negative value (The bigger the "absolute" value, the bigger the offset).
Note: The offset cannot be bigger than the box itself

    Hope this helps!

This is a great tip but needs a caveat:

The original image box that you created and copied has to remain in the document in order for Quark to a) print the image properly and b) collect the image properly if you do a collect for output.

    Hi Robert,

I am not sure I understand your comment.

This is nothing more than an anchored picture box. As such, Quark will print it and collect its content like it would for any other picture box.
The trick here is just that even though the picture box it anchored in the text its contents is "visually" outside of the text box.

    Hope this make sense!

I realize that, but I have seen instances with Quark 4.11 where some images have not printed correctly or even been collected because the original picture box wasn't in the document. Like I said, it's a caveat (beware!)... as are most things in Quark :?

Thanks for the heads up, this is the first I hear of it...

I personally never encounter that problem and, like I mention, I used anchored boxes quite often.

    I guess I'm only lucky! :)

    Ace,

I'm as lucky as you are. My anchored picture boxes all show up in Usage and always collect, too. FWIW!
