using lock to baseline grid with designing

If you want to micro adjust headings and/or paragraph line space by setting space before/after and the value you want to set is not equal to or not a multiple of the leading, "lock to baseline grid" doesn't really work.
    lramsey@aapg.org:
Have any of you used baseline grid in designing programs, etc? I want to have the baseline of my copy line up across the page in 3 columns but trying to figure out just how to handle heads and subheads to work on that baseline grid has been difficult.

Are there any suggestions or sources to go to that will help?

    Thanks.

You can try using Baseline shift to offset the headline type, in conjunction with say a finer baseline grid and space after and before.

In Quark prefs>Layout>Paragraph you can set the starting point of your grid as well as the leading. Once this set up the first line of the grid will appear at the given position.
Then you can -as said in another post- baseline shift your lines or words to offset and fine tuning the space between text and baseline.
In the ยง settings, you can tick or untick the Lock on Grid box depending on what you want exactly.
Then to get text accross a 3-column page, you must create a new text box set to 1 col. That's the way.
    Hope this helps.

    Linda,

You can also set your grid in "half". Here's an example:

Text: 10/12. Level One Subhead: 18/24, space above 24, space below 12. Level Two Subhead: 15/18, space above 12, space below 6. Then, set your baseline grid to 6 points rather than 12! Your heads will be able to lock as well as your text. You'll also be able to lock things like bulleted lists, etc., with a space above and below the list of 6 points.

(All numbers for the sake of example; you can do the same thing with any leading, just set your baseline grid to half the leading.)

Nifty trick courtesy of rp on the sic list.

    peace,
    Linda :-)
