Small Quark docs save as gigantic docs

We have a problem where what should be about a 5MB Quark doc is saving a 702MB! The total supporting art file of images and logos is only 80MB and it is just a two-sided post card. I tried removing all the unused layouts but that only reduced it from 707 to 702MB.

I upgraded to 7.31 from 7.1 but that didn't make any difference.

It is being run on a Mac Intel Xeon 2 X 2.66 GHz Dual Core and using MAC OS 10.4.11

Any ideas on why it is so massive?

    Thanks!

Are you working on legacy (old version) files by any chance?

File bloat can occur when you work on pre-v7 files. Best to start a new v7 document and thumbnail drag the pages out of the old file in to that one.

    You're right! That did it.

    Thanks a lot.

I don't have V7 but this tip may also help you out.

     Anyone have a translated link?

    This one's busted.

That link might have been the thing about setting Color TIFFs to 8-bit in Preferences / Application / Display.

It gets big because the way Quark 7 saves it. It just appends data to the file when you save it as opposed to just saving the part of the file that has changed (the way the auto save and earlier versions of Quark does) Every so often, close the file, lock it (under get info), then re-open it and save under a new name. It's a pain but it works. Then trash the locked version and use the new smaller version you just saved. I've found the "thumbnail to a new Quark 7 document solution" may work at first, but the file still increases in size every time the file is saved.

    Hi,

I want to clarify something, the file size growth issue (or as gpm would say, file bloatification) is not the result of QuarkXPress appending data to a file in the manner described above. This makes it sound as if the issue is "by design", as opposed to a defect in the software. There was an issue, under certain circumstances, with some versions of QuarkXPress 7.x, that resulted in chunks of space in the file were left "unclaimed". Asa a result, the application is unable to reclaim such space when performing subsequent save operations. That issue was fixed, and is not present in QuarkXPress 7.31.

The problem is that files that were left with space that cannot be reclaimed, will remain with such unclaimed space in them. The suggestions made above are valid ways to restore the file to an appropriate state.
